Dr. Brainbug (Or How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love Omnicidal Space Locusts)

So we've all been there. The derelict space station, mysteriously abandoned colony, or lone megacorporate starfaring vessel when we had a run in with space buggery, and not of the fun kind either.

Well... depending...

My Eldritch thread was polluted with references to these multi limbed, biomass consuming, toxin spewing, constantly hyper evolving, eusocial hive mind minded, organic technology brainbug creating, perpetually regenerating, and morals free mass murdering space locusts. So clearly there is an interest in these gribbly genetically engineered, pinnacle of Darwinian evolution, monster spawn. But which ones to discuss?

Granted, the Arachnids got the top spot in my collage pic here, but we all know they're the tutorial level compared to what truly resides in the deep vacuum of space, or lying within ancient vaults somewhere just waited to be released by the first passerby. Whether its the infesting evils of the Zerg, the chilling body horror of the Necromorphs, the late 90's Microsoft equivalent bioweapon known as the Flood, the evergrowing hive fleets of the Tyranids or our classic HR Giger Xenomorphs whose purity in predation even made mechbois blush... or even that worthy distraction from the shitty Marvel Civil War crossover known as the Annihilation Wave, what are your favorite aspects when it comes to this contemporary science fiction staple?

How do you compare and contrast these and other omnicidal predator races who seem equally intent on OM NOMMING us until we like it? Do you have a favorite? Or do you hate this whole thing in general and just wanna talk about how much better the Replicators and Borg are (no this is not the thread for that... leave)? And of course everyones favorite fandom hypothetical... what would happen if they met and got all... physical? :sneaky:

Brain Bug did nothing wrong.

I don't think I'd classify The Flood or Necromorphs in the same category as space bugs. They're more parasite zombies, like headcrabs or those things from BloodRayne.

Omcidal Space Locusts, not mere space bugs. There's bound to be some distinction and overlap. Plus the Tyranids and Zerg do the whole infestation and parasite thing as well and I'm sure there is some crossover when it comes to the Flood and Necromorphs beyond being parasitic zombies. There's certainly a far larger and formidable threat of their expansion if left unchecked then with Headcrabs since those are basically still on the level of animal level intelligence with no indication as of yet as any greater collective consciousness or the like having arisen yet. If there's too much specialization then it'll just point out the obvious, which is they are all different, but that's the point I suppose in that they can be compared and contrasted and indeed have been plenty of times already... but certainly not on this forum. :)

Oh, I thought it was a space bug thing. What criteria are we talking about? I kind of considered the Flood and Necromorphs different based on them being wholly dependent on assuming control of the bodies of their victims as the basis for functioning in what amounts to their "adult" form. They're obligate parasites that require the continued use of the host. As opposed to Xenomorphs which are merely parasitoids, which kill the host at birth, or Tyranids and Zerg, which can include genetic material from outside sources, but it's not part of their basic functioning.

Do the necromorphs show any sign of higher intelligence? I only played the first two games, because you cannot pay me to get a game off of origin.

Any criteria I could reasonably think up would be arbitrary and absurd. :p

No idea. Never played Dead Space... too spooky for me. But I was under the assumption there was more going on in their parasitic omnicidal brains because YouTube told me so.
