If I recall correctly the Mediterranen misdirect involved dropping a corpse with a suitcase handcuffed to his wrist off the Spanish coast and a British destroyer sending a fake "we're sinking" distress signal.
Other highlights of the Mediterranean misdirect, Operation Mincemeat:
Determining that the disinformation was received by the exact placement of a hair in the file
Specifically predicting the Spanish would relay the information to the Axis
Properly filling out all on-person paperwork for the fictitious officer
Acquiring a variety of "pocket junk" to have clear indication of a personal life
Getting a saucy picture from a clerk to be the fake fiancé
The coroner specifically keeping an eye out for somebody who wouldn't be missed
Ending up with somebody who
died of rat poison shortly thereafter, thus having no visible cause of death
Locating a body-double for the dead bum to get a lively face to put on the ID
Spending a week vigorously wearing the ID card for authenticity
Sending an additional encrypted transmission to say they thought the case hadn't been opened.
It was a
long string of actions to try and lock in "Ah, but if they know our plan, then we shall plan around their plan planning around our plan!" on fake information. Which is an ironic quote given who it's from...
Edit: Another bit of selling it was stockpiling Greek currency and maps in Egypt, one of the
cheapest feigns one could commit to, but also one of the least arguable.
