Ok. True story time.

Back in the ol' food mill, we mechanics were getting the place ready for corn season. Clean all of the processing equipment, make sure it runs, replace old bearings and worn shakers and a dozen other things. Rather late into the preparation phase, one of the electrical panels in the Motor Control Center started overheating. This is a Bad Thing, because that electrical panel controls switches and motor starters with a lot of amperage running through them, and it was adjacent to many similar control panels that controlled even more powerful equipment.

After a week of warning Management about the impending doom, they made an executive decision. They propped the electrical panel open and stuck a box fan in front of it.

Now, some of you are wincing because this is obviously a bad idea. Others are gasping because you've heard the maxim that "There is nothing so permanent as a temporary fix" and this is the most temporary of all fixes. Indeed, it is the kind of fix that ought only to be applied if the electrician is known to be in the lunchroom, but isn't answering the radio. True to form, that electrical box was still being cooled by that fan five months later when it finally caught fire, and the mill had to be evacuated.

I did not personally witness the Fire Marshal's expression when the situation was explained to him, but I hear it was legendary.
