How would you have handled the Halo franchise post Halo 3?

Well, I and a close friend have put together a whole thread about where we would have taken Halo after the third game. It's a long one, though, and I need to get off my ass and write more stories to justify the worldbuilding.
To keep things short, ODST and Reach still happen. I don't think I'd have enough control over Bungie to change Reach's story, but if I do, I would do my damndest to make it fit in with The Fall of Reach.
So. For the story going forward, the Forerunner are going to play a reduced role. And I don't mean "Reduced as compared to Halo 4 and Halo 5," I mean "Reduced as compared to the first three Halo games". There's only so many stories you can tell about a Forerunner superweapon/megastructure before it gets stale.
Instead, the story in general is about the UNSC rebuilding and re-establishing itself as the Great Schism winds down with either side falling to pieces. The end-state of this phase of the story would see several stable factions forming. One would be the UNSC, one would be a breakaway Human faction, one would be a Brute faction similar to the Banished, a fourth would be the Arbiter's coalition, a fifth would be a resurgent religious Covenant, and a final one would be a weird ex-Covenant faction that doesn't quite fit into the other two.
Halo 4 would pick up a few months after Halo 3, as the UNSC gets sucked into the Great Schism. The protagonist isn't going to be the Master Chief. Instead, it's either going to be a Spartan that somehow survived Reach (Grey Team? One of the ones that disappeared in First Strike?) or the Spirit of Fire is going to wander back on stage.
Actually, the Spirit of Fire is the best bet because they've been out of the loop for twenty years, so the opening level of the game could catch them and the players up to speed.
