Imperial Guard Regiments Versus Soviet Motorized Rifle Division

Lets see how this works...

A Soviet era Motorized Rifle Division consisting of the tradtional standard of two Motorized Rifle Regiments, one Mechanized Rifle Regiment plus a Tank Regiment, an Artillery Regiment, and several battalions of support and specialist troops has been tasked with taking a strategic low cresting ridgeline in a temperate area of mostly prairie and grassland with large numbers of clusters of trees and areas of low level, low density brush as well.

The strategic location is being defended by two Imperial Guard Infantry Regiments backed by an Imperial Guard Artillery Regiment who've had about a day to erect defenses (foxholes, light trenches, dugout positions for artillery etc). An Imperial Guard Tank Regiment Will Arrive Shortly After the two forces meet.

Imperial Guard have taken the Ridgeline heights to the West, outside of the town of Harpers Ferry which they are to defend. The River is Impassable for the purposes of large scale flank attacks and the frontage between the two rivers at this bend is about three kilometers. The ridgeline is heavily forested in many parts while the rest is typically grasslands with lots of light rural structures and agricultural and recreational constructions and manmade terrain. The Imperial Guard Artillery Regiment has positions on the bluffs on the Eastern side of the river if practical but the goal of the Soviets is to capture Harpers Ferry itself, not the bluffs on the other side of the river.

The bridge is indestructible but traffic can be interdicted.

The Soviet Division has about 14,000 troops (minus the SAM Battalion) with the following vehicle and heavy equipment:

The Imperial Guard Tank Regiment Won't Arrive on the Battlefield until an hour after reports of heavy fighting are received.

Soviet artillery is not worst then IoM,BUT - IoM tanks are superior, just like infrantry weapons. And,IoM is defending from trenches.
They would hold, soviet need few more dyvisions to break through.

Not really trenches yet. They just had enough time to make foxholes and basic fighting positions, not full on trench networks or anything before the Soviets showed up. Plus the Imperial Guard Tanks haven't arrived yet, they'll still need a couple hours to join the battle as they are transiting across the River through the small town before they can engage. The Soviets have assembled the whole division so they can form their initial attack however they desire.

They still lost - IG AT weapons would made short work on soviet tanks, their artillery could counter soviet, and lasers of IG are superiot to AK74.
Not mention, that AK74 bullets would bounce on IG flak armour. It was considered as t-shirt only against WH40 weapons,on 1980 Earth they would be bulletproof.

The Imperial Guard Infantry is the only one in position at the moment. They have over a hundred Heavy Bolters because almost every squad has at least one, plus Grenade Launchers and Meltaguns but those are shorter ranged. The only dedicated anti-armor weapons they have are four heavy Lascannons and the Anti-Tank Squads, of which there are only eight that are equipped with a total of 16 lascannons and 16 missile launchers.

Otherwise the only vehicles they got with autocannons or heavier weapons are as follows:

4x Salamander Scout Tanks (w/ Autocannon, Heavy Bolter, Improved Comms, Minesweeper, Rough Terrain Modification, a Searchlight, Smoke Launchers, Track Guards)
4x Sentinels- Cadia Pattern (w/ extra armor, Autocannon)
4x Chimerro APC (w/ Hunter-Killer Missile Launcher, Multi-Laser Turret, Searchlight, Smoke Launchers)
4x Chimerax APC (w/ four light autocannons, Searchlight, Smoke Launchers).

Is that enough to counter 220 T-72B Tanks, 150 BMP Infantry Fighting Vehicles backed by everything else the Soviet Motorized Division can bring to bear?

Do you think autocannons and heavy bolters can penetrate and disable/destroy IFV's and even T-72 Tanks?

Do you think autocannons and heavy bolters can penetrate and disable/destroy IFV's and even T-72 Tanks?
So,46AT weapons against 220 tanks and 150 BMP...autocannons could destroy BMP,but not T.72,i fear.
So,if soviets attacked regardless of their loses, they could do that.

They would lost most or even all tanks, but it is possible./remember,that normal soviet infrantry would kill IG only by accidents,or schooting in the face - so most killing must be done by tanks here./

Wouldn't lasrifle go straight through the armor of APCs and IFVs, while body armor of guardsmen would shrug off small arms fire from their counterparts?

Imperial guard should utilise reverse slope defense, having only artillery observers on the slope, to guide mortar and artillery fire on the units crossing the bridge.

That is why soviet infrantry and BMP die. But,they would be dying long enough for T.72 come and kill IG infrantry - althought most of them would die, too.

Considering that IG tanks would come later,we could have still IG pyrrhic victory.Well,if enough BTR 60 with infrantry survive and help fight IG tanks,we could have either soviet pyrrhic victory,or mutual anihilation.

I was figuring that Lasguns were kinda equivalent to anti-material rifles. So maybe the frontal armor of the BMP's and maybe side armor would be resilient to lasgun beams (and maybe Heavy Bolter fire) but the rear and some flank shots wouldn't be. The lesser vehicles like BRDM's and BTR's would obviously be more vulnerable of course. But Lasguns are probably shorter ranged then the main weapons carried on those armored vehicles plus they act like far more visible tracers as is my understanding. So there are tradeoffs.

The Soviet Motorized Division IMHO is facing more dilemmas than the defending Imperial Guard. The Imperial Guard aren't fully entrenched so they're vulnerable to artillery and longer ranged fire. But the Imperial Guard has a tank regiment that is only hours away AND the support of an Artillery Regiment of their own. Do the Soviets focus on eliminating enemy artillery? Or breaking up the Imperial Guard fighting positions in support of the Soviet assaults? Do the Soviets engage in long range fire on the Imperial Guard positions? Or do they attack more quickly to prevent reinforcements from investing in the engagement. Even the AK-74's the Soviets are using might be defeated by Flak Armor but it still has a deleterious effect on those hit.

And yeah, the Imperial Guard could use a reverse slope defense to avoid the direct fire, which could allow them to use their lasguns, heavy bolters and squad level meltaguns to more effect in close quarters combat. Plus I assume Imperial Guard infantry are probably better in melee then Soviet infantry even with all other things equal.

Question here I think is how many Meltas does the IG Regiment have. If they had time to dig in at the reverse slope, then Soviet tanks would be coming over the slope, making short range of Meltas kinda irrelevant.

And Soviet tanks do like to blow up when hit.

Wouldn't the Soviets face morale issues, at least at first, from facing literal sci fi weapons?
Of course - but, they are soviets. When they are send to die, they go and die, till less then 20-30% survive.
I think, that they could take that hill loosing almost all IFV and most tanks and BTR 60 here.

Each Squad of ImpGuard Infantry has a Meltagun. The Engineering Assault Squads have two. So about 120 or so Meltaguns per Infantry Regiment.

Handwave morale issues regarding facing scifi weapons. They're generally aware of what they're about to engage so it'll be normal morale issues beyond that aspect.
