The problem when it comes to Chinese animal treatment is that they have very different values than the west, values that do not change quickly.
Its also due to the fact, they just don't care. China is powerful enough that they can shrug off western criticism in these matters.

China is obviously a great power, it is just amazingly bad at PR. I do personally expect some kind of Chinese crash, but honestly it's kind of like economists predicting twelve of the last three recessions; it's inevitable that their system will hit a wall, but jumping the gun has been going on for over a decade. The big question is if the crash will lead to regime change, and I think a lot of people really want to see regime change and match the evidence to fit their desire.
I think the biggest sign of a coming China crash is just how much hate China is getting in the West these days. It is unclear to me if China's house is made of bricks or straw, but it is pretty likely a house is going to fall down if a crowd of people are carrying hammers and crowded around the house and talking about how it is going down.

China is delibretly pissing off the entire world in the hopes that it can spark a nationalist response that will let them weather the storm.
I personally think they will just end up pissing off the world and after the storm hits no one will help them.
