Israeli-Hamas War News & Updates

Blowing up in social media for the past eight or so hours. Hamas has opened an offensive against Southern Israel in a massive coordinated assault. Reportedly thousands of rockets/missiles launched, some estimates saying upwards of 3000-5000 of them. Palestinian militants have attacked numerous checkpoints at the Gazan-Israeli border and widespread infiltration has taken place via the ground, sea and even paragliders. Hamas has also used drones and drone dropped munitions as well.

Reportedly over a hundred Israeli civilians and soldiers have been captured, with many having been taken back to Gaza as hostages/human shields. Dozens of Israelis documented as killed as well, including many civilians. Over a hundred wounded by the rocket attacks. There's videos all across social media of corpses and hostages being dragged through the streets of Gaza... of burning vehicles, Palestinian militants infiltrating Israeli neighborhoods and roads by checkpoints littered with dead Israeli civilians.

Israel is launching counter operations, including airstrikes against Gaza as well and declared a state of emergency.

The apparent motivation for Hamas' offensive is to incur a response from Israel that will harm its attempts at normalizing relations with more Middle Eastern countries, including most notably Saudi Arabia. A lot of commentators are stating that Russia is backing Hamas but personally, I don't see that as a thing. It just so happens that Russia's allies/clients in the region are supporting Hamas, nothing direct from Moscow.

This seems like the most serious Israeli-Palestinian Conflict since the Second Intifada IMHO and it just started.

There's a lot of ree'ing going on right now but a lot of threads are collating the media coming out of the zone, a fair bit of it graphic in nature. And likely unconfirmed as well.

Thread by Evergreen Intel collating events.

And one by some Israeli supporter having a panic attack.

Israeli Airstrikes in Response to Attacks

Not just Israelis have been taken hostage, foreign workers have as well at the moment.

At least one, maybe two Merkava Tanks have been lost, one to drone dropped munitions as well.

The IDF is still actually doing roof knocking before striking some targets in Gaza.

They could just blow up the building Russian/Hezbollah/Hamas style.

Which tells you all you need to know about the differences between the two sides. The IDF actually cares about restraining civilian deaths.

Now, will Hamas allow the people in that building to leave? That's doubtful.

At least 100 dead in Israel, close to 200 in Gaza: The ruling Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip carried out an unprecedented, multi-front attack on Israel at daybreak on Saturday, firing thousands of rockets as dozens of fighters infiltrated the heavily fortified border in several locations by air, land and sea.
- offers a good point-by-point overview

Attack is likely an expression of hatred and desperation both. Islam is not known for its ability to coexist with other religions. On the other hand, Palestinians had been slowly squeezed by Israel, with Israel taking territory beyond what the UN mandate had given them. Yet even had Israel respected the mandate, Palestinians and other Arabs had made it clear that it is not the borders, but rather the continued existence of Israel, that they have problem with. Hamas at the very least does not want conflict resolution, as permanent state of war allows it to stay in power.

Well, that's that; Hamas has signed their organizational death warrant, and anyone who doesn't leave Gaza is likely going to be treated as a Hamas member as the IDF go through the place and wreck anything Hamas could use.

Allegedly Hamas managed to capture hostages (military and civilian), Humvees and weapons. Don't believe the rumor of Hamas having shot down IAF helicopters because that's a video from DCS videogame. I am surprised by the rapidity and so far partial success of Hamas, I don't think even the the PLO OR other Palestinian groups ever managed to this kind of mess and infiltration....Looks Hollywood like. Definitively has broken most of the "invicibility" myth of Israel and even Bibi looks worried to a degree.

They seem to have taken out a Merkava tank which is ... impressive. I remember the Merkavas having better armor than an Abrams.

More confirmation; civies need to leave Gaza, because Israel will be levelling anything related to or used by Hamas.

Edit:

They've ID's the young woman who's body was getting dragged around in a pickup truck; German national there for 'music festival for peace' near Gaza.

Violence of action and element of surprise are universally recognized fuel for military successes.
However, that can't last for long. Soon they will be back to playing victim again.

People on the internet point out that at least some of the taken out Merkavas were not even combat ready, with barrel covers and Trophy covers on.
As i said, the surprise is a big case of Mossad dropping the ball.
But there is no tank in history or current service that can't be attacked from above successfully while not protected by air defense and not even readied for combat.
Even a WW2 tactical bomber could destroy any modern tank in such a situation.

As of 4 hours ago:

And some assorted videos:

Ok serious question, how they captured the Merkavas?

Regardless how you see the conflict, that's still impressive...

Also this happened apparently :
