Warner Brothers Games is going to publish Mortal Kombat 12... or Mortal Kombat 1 rather, since it's basically a reboot. It's expected to be released sometime in 2023.
The last time the series was rebooted was in Mortal Kombat 9 which was released in 2011 or therabouts and it was an awesome game retelling the story of the first three games before moving to do its own thing with Mortal Kombat X which jumped forward about twenty years allowing them to introduce a lot of well received new characters, and letting other classic characters really mature their character arcs.
Then there was Mortal Kombat 11 which was... a game.
It wasn't bad and in fact pretty entertaining but by doing flashbacks and nods to previous history throughout the game as the main villain was revealed to be a Time Lord (not her actual title) named Kronika was kinda weak. The Aftermath expansion that took place after Mortal Kombat 11 was pretty good though despite the time travel shenanigans and actually helped set up this reboot.
I will say the trailer, as a teaser, looks pretty neat and I'm hoping they do a good job with a classic game inspired open canvas now. We can revisit and revise the relationships between Mileena and Kitana, or the Shirai Ryu and Lin Kuei Clans etc.
