I have to think that this would hurt tourism.

It already is. I saw a Youtube video this morning. The merchants in the square around Notre Dame are deducing staff hours, because business is down. They are really concerned, particularly since reconstruction is likely to take 20 years. I know, Macron said 5, but that is not credible.

I have to think that this would hurt tourism.

Historic buildings are weird in how the are handled. The insurance that you buy considers this and large companies like Allianz even offer special programs just for historic buildings that cover everything from hotels to Willaimsburg.

They do things like offer programs will they find wood that matches the same look as older banned wood. They also will provide money to hire craftsmen to do fancy stone and wood work.

The reason for this is that when people visit historic palces they want the original look that came with them. In other words they want New York Centeral Station not New York Penn Station.

They understand that the value and draw of historic places is that they are historic.

But not the French government, which owns Notre Dame Cathedral due to the anti-clerical laws of the early 1900s.

Thats pretty much the norm for French politics.

Their a really inflexible people so when things change the leadership digs in its heels until its forced to leave and then you get a new government/republic.

Yeah, but there’s the complication that the people have to deal with another group of people who are definitely gonna overtake them in numbers and are likely to have no issue or outright embrace for policies that destroy a bunch of basic civil liberties alongside eventually, possibly economic transactions

It’s not a situation you’re used to seeing, one group of majority-class-underdogs having to deal with another that popped up with different cultural and social values, so while they maybe getting ready to sharpen the guillotine they have to deal with new tyrants arising from their new fellows
