It’s a respectability thing. They did not have a marriage where they loved each other but as long as both kept their affairs discreet so the public at large doesn’t know they are unfaithful then there won’t be any negative effects for nobles.

It's a British thing. Prestige is everything for the nobility and a scandal would damage Diana's family more than Charles. It's why Diana did the "Stiff upper lip" and kept going until Charles made the mistake of getting caught publicly. At that point there was no saving face possible.
