Breaking news from Brasil--military forces are reported to have replaced Bolsonaro for his failure to deal with the COVID-19 crisis.

A second source on the reputed coup d'etat.

-- Essentially, they are claiming they have appointed a new acting President and are making all decisions, without formally saying they have removed Bolsonaro from office.

I've not seen this on AP or Reuters yet. Are we sure this isn't rumor?

As far as I know, it's fake news.

Supposedly, around March 30th, they pulled the above-mentioned stunt in order to make him a puppet-president and to limit his exposition to the press. However, there's a few suspicious things with this rumor.

First one, had this thing happened, someone would have already been screaming to the skies on social media; I could understand that maybe the plotters would have got Bolsonaro's sons captured, but all the Bolsonaro loyalists on the government? Without the general population knowing? Unlikely.

Second one, one of the stated goals of this is to silence Bolsonaro, or at least, have him speak less, or in a more reasonable tone. There has been no such change since then; in fact, on April 2nd, he did an interview where he slammed hard the Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo State Governors. Why would they let him do that, if they had him under his control?

Third, Bolsonaro is a stubborn one, I don't think he would accept that sort of thing quietly.

Fourth, and that's a longer term thing, the attitudes and decisions of a military government using Bolsonaro as a puppet would be a lot different than those of a Bolsonaro government. People would notice something was different.

So, yes, I find it hard to believe.

If the military had tried to marginalize him, his supporters would be in the streets, likely clashing with the police and anti Bolsonaro leftists.

Which we definitely would have heard about by now.

This is fantasy of the Left. No seriously, I've seen many posts on wanting to take power back from him through violent means and then purge his supporters in an orgy of blood. They don't give a damn that he won fair and square. Its all about power. Their power.

Military Coup'De Tat

Wasn't that how Cuba was taken over and went from prospering capitalist nation to communist hellhole? Or that was another nation

@gral thank you very much for the local info on the ground. Now here’s the interesting question—what’s the likely source of this rumor and what’s the political objective behind it?
That's the big question, isn't it? I first heard of this rumor yesterday night, a guy from a defense and military affairs magazine posted a video on April 1st about it, and my brother was watching it. I suspect it's either a paranoid fantasy on part of someone or an attempt to separate Bolsonaro from one of his sources of support, the armed forces.

I would lean toward imagining it to be the later.

Even a prospering capitalist nation will have its “rebels” who call their prosperity hell
Eh Cuba wasn't a paradise before the Communists, but it was OK, and better than a lot of places in the Caribbean. Political repression was a problem - Fulgencio Batista had alienated even the USA, so everyone wanted him out. Castro and his gang used his position as one of the main armed groups to make everyone else submit, get out or be executed, and the result is the charming place we see now, one where even Chilean communists don't want to be left in.

Nice to know, the history I learned years ago was really abridged and didn't cover that

Though being "OK" is pretty much way better than Communism
