Taiwan Straights Tension

Well if that is the planes final approach, it should be rather tricky to shootdown since it'll be on the other side of Taiwan and all of those mountains and the like. Maybe they'll STRIKE THE AIRPORT instead! :p

I actually highly doubt it. I think it's largely posturing and saber rattling.

At worst... And I still find it highly unlikely, they might try to grab those islands directly off Taiwans coast and gauge the reaction/response.

The positioning of their "exercises" clearly looks positioning for an attack on all fronts. China is an unstable regime that could do with a "good war" to take peoples's minds off things, and Biden has projected nothing but weakness to them. It's a shit show waiting to happen.

Pelosi actually visiting does not present weakness, so they're getting mixed messages.

This could indeed be preparation for an invasion. It could also be nothing except posturing, but then some over-achiever in the PLAN decides to get 'patriotic' and starts firing on Taiwanese.

Maybe this will be another round of 'and then nothing actually happened.'

We won't know for a couple more days.

Unfortunately for the CCP their Navy does not have a lot of Mine Sweepers. And Taiwan has mined the shit out of the waters where an invasion is even possible. They made Destroyers. They made carriers they made subs but they did not make the support ships in numbers to actually do anything on the scale of an amphibious invasion. All they would do is get a decent chunk of their Navy sunk.

God willing.

Given the sheer level of galaxy brain a totalitarian state can manage, I wouldn't put this past them.

Edit: Also, the Chinese Navy does have a surprising amount of minesweepers. Hundreds of them are old and mothballed, but very much there. They have dozens of active ones too.

Their navy is actually very heavy on short-range landing craft designed primarily for hitting Taiwan. They've done a good job of at least proportioning their Navy for the mission it's most likely to face.

Whether the ships they've built are actually any good, on the other hand...

Just need enough for the initial assault

If China did launch its military operation, I would suspect that they might be more eager to cause a lot of damage to Taiwan than Russia attempting to “limit” the damages done to Ukraine. Quemoy and Matsu would obviously be targeted for bombardment, but there might also be a chance that China would land troops in the southern part of Taiwan, before proceeding towards Taipei in the northward direction.

How many Taiwanese do you think that the US would be able to successfully get out of Taiwan in a mass evacuation if it was losing this war?

Assuming that China would even show mercy to the Taiwanese that wants to flee from Taiwan? It would depend on how many Taiwanese would be able to escape. Other than that, fleeing Taiwanese might also make their way to SE Asia, where there's a long standing Chinese diaspora there.

Yeah, that makes sense, though I think that the US and Western countries would be more lucrative destinations for them. Still, resettling in Thailand or Malaysia or Indonesia won't be the end of the world for them if they will want to flee China--if they're actually allowed to flee China by the millions, that is!
