Season 2 is when episodes got bigger.
Season 3 is when episodes started to become novellas.
It was unavoidable, I suppose. The stories were getting bigger in terms of scope. Bigger fights, new and interesting universes that had to get introduced, things to be described, etc. As I said in the last thread, it's the equivalent of having big-budget episodes, just you get big word counts instead.
This is also the season which saw UF's first official spinoff - "Origins" by Captain-General and Devastator, with heavy use of material from the work of @Harlock - and the production of the first official "side story" episode under the "Tales from the Undiscovered Frontier" heading. And because of the need to accommodate more stuff, I ended up expanding the season from 18 episodes to 20 and then to 22.
Anyway, as usual, I'll start with links to the prior seasons.
