Um, Gate is more generic fantasy gets invaded by a modern military type of setting.. . . This assumes a certain level of anime knowledge that I'm not sure as many folks have.
But my understanding is that isn't Gate a High Fantasy setting, while Lodoss is more a Mid-Fantasy setting? That doesn't seem to lead to good things for Lodoss, as they will have overall fewer mages and the like.

Also, not familiar with Lodoss, myself, but IIRC it started off as a LotR fanfic type franchise, so I am skeptical of its ability to beat back the Saderans as they probably have a bigger and more organized military since they own most of their world.
Was it actually a post-apocalyptic story that took place on Venus, or am I mixing stuff up here?
So, generic fantasy vs. generic fantasy with what I understand to be a post-apocalyptic twist.Saderan Invasion Force would find a world not unlike their own with its own set of gods to appease and dangerous dragons.
Record of Lodoss War was actually started when somebody wrote down transcripts of a series of DnD games (1st edition). Then they edited the scripts into a series of novels (Not light, this was before light novels were a thing), then offered it as a setting for a DnD supplement to TSR, which was turned down so it wound up becoming its own thing. Still pretty heavily DnD-flavored though, and defined a lot of fantasy tropes for anime that came after, like dark elves basically looking tanned rather than pitch black the way Drow are.Um, Gate is more generic fantasy gets invaded by a modern military type of setting.

Ah, got it, dunno why I misremembered that little detail about the originator.Record of Lodoss War was actually started when somebody wrote down transcripts of a series of DnD games (1st edition). I'd assume they are fairly close in power levels.
Is the series worth it?
K, will take a look at it.Yes Comrade, it is worth it. Watch the OVA first then the series proper.
Once you do, you will realize what that quote from Karla truly means and the fate of poor Pina if she ever comes to Lodoss
K, will take a look at it.
Who was Karla?
Ok, I saw 2 episodes of the 1990 OVA, I'd say wizards in Lodoss are more powerful, and this Kara (Karla) person will likely be a problem.Nope not spoiling it comrade.
As the tin sys.
Also:
Lodoss will neither be unified nor conquered. -Karla
Have fun.
