Given the facts that have emerged thus far, I'd argue that the problem was less that people actually "bought it", and more that OceanGate placed itself in a position where no regulatory body had clearcut authority to actually order them to stop. And that situation existed because the self-regulation of the commercial submersibble industry has historically been so good that no outside authority was really necessary.
It's hard to argue with a 100% safety record until you suddenly get the person who argues that a 100% safety record is inherently bad because cutting corners is good.
Um the people that made the Titan were you know all White People. So I don't know what you are getting at.

By diversity hires you mean 2 white girls and the rest 20 year old white guys. I have seen the picture of his design team. They are all white.
There weren't any "diversity hires" in the first place, and Rush didn't hire any veteran navy experts -- his comment about them "not being inspiring" was the reason he gave when it was pointed out that he had never hired anyone with submarine experience.

As @Sailor.X already pointed out, there are quite a few pictures out there of the OceanGate design team and they are about as un-diverse as possible. They certainly weren't avoiding hiring white men.
As for Stockton Rush's statement, his words and the context speak for themselves. It was an interview with Teledyne Marine, and Stockton specifically said that he "didn't hire 50-year-old white guys with military expertise" because they were not inspirational. Not that he didn't hire guys or that he didn't hire white people, specifically that he didn't hire 50 years olds with military expertise and that not doing so was part of what made his company better than the competition. In his own words again, "So we've really tried to get very intelligent, motivated, younger individuals involved because we're doing things that are completely new."
