I have to say, I'm kinda glad he's like this, because it's comforting knowing that after the GOP went from running Mitt Romney to Trump, that the other side can also have their ability to pick decent candidates evaporate almost overnight. I mean, it's not really a good sign in general, but at least the GOP isn't uniquely crippled by this.
It's frankly amazing that Biden cannot or will not answer such a critically important question, given that playing coy on this could easily turn off swing voters. Say what you will about Trump, and there is a lot to say, but he's more or less a known quality, and if he is a threat to our democracy as the media have loudly insisted....well, it's be four years and so far the worst he's done has been maybe having his SecState bend the limits of the Hatch act at the party convention. I think we can make it through four more years of Trump pushing the limits of century old laws no one cares about.
But court packing, and the things that would lead up to that (abolishing the filibuster being the big one), those are things that would fundamentally alter our government and how the federal government welds power and protects the rights of political minorities, and I think the fact Biden believes he can get away with doing that is probably the strongest evidence yet for the dementia theory. Granted, thanks to our borderline treasonous media class he got a week or so of lag time before pressure started building, but the second it became a campaign policy to duck this question things were going to get ugly.
In closing, I'd remind everyone of a entirely relevant quote from a previous president, that really speaks to the present circumstances:
"Don't underestimate Joe's ability to fuck things up.” - Barack Obama
