I think it has more to do with the fact that gay men have intensely high rates of sexual abuse as children and that those who are sexually abused as children tend to sexually abuse children in adult hood.

On July 12, 2018, Sean Schellenger was killed by a young stranger. Sean was in a heated traffic-related argument when 20-year-old Michael White arrived on a bike and began criticizing Sean's attitude and taking the side of the other driver. When Sean became angry and approached him, Michael took out a knife and ended up stabbing Sean. Then he fled the scene, tossed his knife onto a rooftop, and disposed of his bloody clothes and backpack. Sean died of a single six-inch-deep stab wound in his back.

Comparing his situation to that of Emmett Till in 1955, Michael claimed that he feared for his life after Sean used racially-charged language toward him (which was never corroborated by the various other witnesses). Michael was convicted only of tampering with evidence, and sentenced to two years' probation.
