The Polish people also have very good and well documented reasons to be on a "never again" level of high alert when it comes the intentions of their neighbours.Right, you've gone. I'll let you in on a secret, do you know what it is?
The Polish Army is a conscript army with a suspended draft, and our reserves are mostly men in their late 40s and early 50s. The youngest are around 30.
These drills are imminent because de facto the Polish Army has no reserves.
Where do you think we will get the men for an army of over 300,000 from? Out of a hat?
And if you leave me with the argument, conscription is slavery I think I will die laughing. The last time Poles in their masses believed in such bullshit was at the end of the 18th century, 123 years of slavery under a foreign boot effectively cures the bullshit.
Well, if your homeland (i.e. mine) is where it is, every human error and vice has a greater cost than elsewhere. Which means that where elsewhere, despite their faults, one or another human being would not pose much of a problem, in Poland they would usually turn out to be a dangerous disaster for the country. The Polish people also have very good and well documented reasons to be on a "never again" level of high alert when it comes the intentions of their neighbours.
It reminds me of a Polish meme.Speaking of Poland and its neighbors:
Poland is somewhat akin to "a rabbit surrounded by foxes". That rabbit is not having a good day and, for someone Polish, said day is pretty much "a day ending in -y".Well, if your homeland (i.e. mine) is where it is, every human error and vice has a greater cost than elsewhere. For many of our failings are precisely situations where there was little that could have gone wrong, but where misjudgement or human vice caused a bad scenario.
Well provided that this rabbit is from Monthy Python, because we were usually such a rabbit. Especially at the beginning of our recorded history.Poland is somewhat akin to "a rabbit surrounded by foxes". Rabbits are also easy pickings for stoats ... which are about 1/10th the size and slower. Stoats are batshit crazy.Well provided that this rabbit is from Monthy Python, because we were usually such a rabbit. Especially at the beginning of our recorded history.
It's slavery. It's forced labor, also known as slavery. You can say it's necessary slavery, but it is still slavery. The 'simple', moral, but expensive solution is a volunteer force instead or just increase funding for hiring/recruiting.And if you leave me with the argument, conscription is slavery I think I will die laughing. It's not slavery. It's duty. That's something the ideals of codes like chivalry and bushido* espouse. You think that everything is some sort of business transaction. It's not. It's slavery. So Mel Brooks was closer to the reality of the Middle Ages than the Kevin Costner film?
No. No one's got a gun to your head to force one to get food. You can do any number of things in the US to get food, including going to soup kitchens, etc. This is like the libertarian version of the "life in the US is slavery, because if you don't get a job you won't have money to buy food" argument.
Fuck someone outside of yourself forcing you to do something because 'duty', especially the state. The communists held that it was the Pole's duty to slave as workers for their machine, that's some bullshit there. This too is bullshit. Less bullshit, and with an understandable motivation, but still bullshit. It's not slavery. It's duty. That's something the ideals of codes like chivalry and bushido* espouse. I don't care how long it's been a conscript army. It's been a slave army for that long. That's fucking stupid, and they should fix that. Citing laws against a moral argument is just a failure as well. I don't give a shit what the law says, I care what is moral. Legality != morality. What didn't you understand about the phrase that the Polish Army has been a conscript army since partition? The times of the volunteer army passed away with the fall of the PLC, it turned out that it was impossible to defeat an opponent like Russia without organised conscription even despite better tactics and equipment.
I personally recommend the Polish super-production "Krzyzacy." In English its title is "Knights of the Teutonic Order". It's from 1960 and shows 15th century Poland quite well, although there are some goofs and historical transformations it's more because of the source material than communism. If you want reality of Middle Ages, watch old (preferably pre-1960s) movies. They may not be perfect, but they are far closer to truth than any modern trash.
And it should, because we lost our independence despite an army of volunteers to serve later as slaves in other armiesI don't care how long it's been a conscript army. At best, one could give an argument that the slavery is a necessary evil (I don't buy it here, a volunteer force would work fine), but never forget that it is evil.
