To bring it around to current events... The French aren't rioting over the raising of the pension age, strictly speaking. That's how it's billed in the US, but we know how the US is about demonizing unions and glorifying the
rich.

They're rioting - inside the Paris HQ of BlackRock, no less - because BlackRock
administers the country's pension programs. BlackRock has been heavily invested in commercial real estate ventures that were identified as far back as 2010 as rotten, and riddled with the same CDO bombs that
brought down the US housing market in 2008. Now, those commercial CDOs are in trouble around the world and the company has responded by loading them into French pensioners' retirements so that when they collapse (and they will), the pensions will be
wiped out to float BlackRock through.

And the rioters are pissed at Macron, because he (a banker himself to start with) seized special powers under the French Constitution last month, and promptly rammed home the legislation that raises the pension age by two
years, without any vote. The French people are being told that, after a lifetime of work, they can't retire yet - and when they do they're going to lose it all anyway, just to keep Macron's banker buddies
rich.

Now THAT is a reason to burn it all down.

To add onto that.
Here is what the French president said about the US.

Ha! As if there’s much of a Europe with any real European culture left after he and the other traitors allowed half of the third world to move in and run rampart.

Here is what the French president said about the US.

This has been Frances stance since the cold war, they tried to get a non allined movement under their direction going to make themselves leader of a third political pole (this didn't work that well) They tried to unify europe into a cohesive whole with themselves on top to make themselves a great power again (This got hijacked by germany who now really calls the shots)

France has basically been trying to make themselves the hedgemon of europe since the medival era and has consistently failed at said task for centuries, and has tried to make themselves a great power for just as long with better success, however their era in the spot light functionally ended with the great wars.

Their a middling power these days and that drives them up the walls.

Ran across this thread in Twitter. This Translator is apparently stating Politico is being cheeky in its translations and that Macron wasn't acting nearly as cucked as reported.

Interesting read, however a look at Garland's background make me wonder how much of his interpretation is his own political leanings bleeding through.

They seem like both are on the same side politically, however Garland's comments about Israel make me wonder how far to the Left this guy is compared to Politico's people.

I'd like a translation of the article from someone equally proficient in French, but not with the same mindset, before I decide whether the Politico article, or this guy, are more on the money.

France has a history of flexing their Independent Foreign Policy shtick since the end of World War II in 1945; this mess started with de Gaulle.
De Gaulle was a mixed bag.

Over here in the UK, he's seen as a bit of a twat, even if he did do what he did for France's (the War, I mean) benefit.

He did pull France through during and (after a few, er, hiccoughs from other politicians) after the War, though.

France always puts France first, which makes dealing with them as an ally kind of a pain in the ass at times.
