It is the year 1886, the Great game is played by the Leading nations of the world and the scramble for Africa is in full swing, it is a time of ambition and glory both. It is this year in a country of the old continent of Europe, that a seemingly normal boy is born to a small, unnoticeable family. There are millions like him and in this day and age, he would most likely live his life unnoticed by all, to be forgotten by history.
But is that really the case? Is he truly one amongst the the faceless mass? Who knows, mayhap fate has some others plan for him.

But Where is this boy from?
    []The United Kingdom
    []The Third French Republic
    []The Empire of Germany
    []The Kingdom of Italy
    []The Kingdom of Spain
    []The Empire of Austria-Hungary

Note from QM: Alright, Here we go again, Hopefully this time I manage to stick to my quest grrrrr.
    A few things to note;
First of all, this may look like OTL, and taste like it but it's not and is actually another setting, I'll be dropping clues on which one, so up to you to find out! (though I will be modifying things a bit)
Second things, you guys actually have a superpower, sort of, you basically have the CK2-ish systems, even though you character won't notice it, others people will notice the sheer focus you have on the stuff you are working on, that also means advisor(if you have any) will not give you extra actions(as they don't have your "superpower") but instead add bonus to your rolls.
Third things, you guys will not be ruling a country, if only because your QM here doesn't trust himself with the mechanics involved just yet.(Sorry ;))
Turn will be 6 years until you are 18, then 2 years.

Note 2: Just to inform all my players that I have not, in fact, studied Austria-hungary and the time period in a professional fashion, so there may be mistake and I may take liberties with some of the stuff I am unsure about.

Outside of a rundown dormitory in the city of Krakow, a worker in a patched up overall paced nervously, around one meters seventy centimeters in height, he is nervously nursing a cigarette in his calloused hand, his clothes and skin and dirty blonde hair still covered in the distinct residue of burned coal, as his blue eyes roam the paved road. He doesn’t look much older than twenty years old.

Behind him, another worker speaks up.

“Calm down Miłosz, everything is going to be fine, the old lady helped every family from the factory deliver their kids, she know what she is doing.”

The nervous man-Miłosz- stops his pacing to look up at his colleague, eyes wilds.

“Shut up Kazimierz! It’s my first one, let me be nervous you dupek! You weren’t any better when it was your turn!”

Kazimierz raises his hand in surrender.

“Alright, Alright, you keep it up, just remember not to spend too long, the foreman isn’t in the best of mood today, we can’t cover for you too long.”

Miłosz only answer was to irritably wave his colleagues away, resuming his pacing.

With a chuckle and a shrug, Kazimierz left the place, leaving the place.

But before he could leave, a piercing cry could be heard from inside the building, startling both men, leaving them rooted on the spot.

It took a few moments before a veiled old lady made her way out, wiping her wrinkled hand with a clean cloth.

    “Congratulations, it’s a boy.”

She barely had the time to finish, before Miłosz rushed in, almost knocking the old lady
down and leaving her grumbling about overexcited youngsters.

Inside the building, a young lady in a white nightgown lay on the bed, her dark long hair clinging to her forehead as perspiration rolled down her face down to her neck, her fair face smiling down tiredly at a bundle a clothes held in her arms, her bright blue eyes staring into it.

    “Maria!”

She looked up at Miłosz, keeping her smiling face.

    “Come Miłosz, hold your son.”

Trembling, he approached the bed, holding out both arms to take the bundle, looking into it, a small face with blue eyes greeted him, a small tuft of dark hair on his head. From the doorway, Kazimierz smiled.

“My son, My son” cried the new father, holding his infant close to his chest.

Maria looked softly at the two.

“What shall we name him?” she asked.

The worker paused for a moment, looking at his wife and child, before exclaiming in excitement.

[X] Pick a fight with the other kids in the neighborhood– The older kids in your street like to pick on the younger kids like yourself, no way you are letting them get away with it!

    Time: 6 years

DC: Autosuccess/15/55/100 Cost: None Reward: Bonus to Personal combat. Possible Traits. ???

    Roll: 78+5=83

It was hard, at first, you were three when you first decided to fight back, the older kids on the other hand were five to six year old, they easily beat you up and left you covered in bruise and shivering in pain, your mother cried when she saw you, and your father looked ready to storm the kids house and take it up to their parents when he learnt of what happens. He did. The next beating was worse.

Now, maybe you should have gone see your parents once more, surely, this time their parents would not put a with it.

But even at a young age, you were stubborn as a mule, and refused to back down from the challenge.

You spent the next three years picking fight with them, six against one, and hiding your bruises from your family.

At age four, you managed to get one of them alone, and promptly gave him a taste of his own medicine, he never showed up in front of you ever again.

At age five, you beat two more on your own, their parents came to complain to your father about it there was a lot of yelling, and your father gave you a stern scolding after they left, though there was a strange gleam in his eyes. Those two never looked you in the eyes again.

At age six, you fought the last three in a brawl right in the middle of the street, you gave as good as you got until eventually the Bundesgendarmerie had to intervene and separate you. This time, your father got really angry and spanked you a lot, making you promise not to do it again.

Those three never came close to the factory again.

    Fighting REALLY is fun.

DC: Autosuccess/ Autosucces/ 40/100 Cost: None Reward: Possible Traits. small chance of a personal combat bonus. ???

    Roll:80+5=85

Battles are glorious things, or at least, that what you think of them, you spend your first years of life with your fellow factory brats in battle, first fighting as a little foot soldiers and quickly becoming the leader thanks to your charisma and natural head for conflict, defeating first the others group of kids in your street, then the kids from the street adjacent yours, by the time you reached six you were the undefeated leader of several streets of children (in the play) and owner of a large button treasury.

Needless to say, a lot of parents were quite unhappy about their children clothes being messed up.

Reward: Trait Leader of Men +2 Martial +1 Personal combat +5 to all rolls for troops fighting alongside you.

[X] Go bother the men in blue – You see them from time to time, the strange men in blue walking neatly in the street with those strange tube made of metal and wood hanging off their shoulders. They look so…incredible, perhaps you should talk to them?

    Time: 6 years

    DC:40/80/100 Cost: None Reward:???

    Roll: 41+5=46

The men in blue were quite annoyed when you showed up and started asking question, most of them took to ignoring you some even shooing you away, fortunately, you were quite a persistent kid, and some of them warmed up to you over time.

That’s when you learned that they were actually soldiers! You didn’t know what soldiers looked like until then! Seeing you so excited the soldiers regaled you with tale of battle and glorious deed, they even let you touch their rifles and tried to explain to you how they work!

In the end, while you did not learn much of use, you managed to get closer to the soldiers.

Reward: Reduced DC for further, some knowledge about guns, slightly increased reputation with local garrisons.

Diplomacy: “Approaching others is a bit embarrassing.”

You quickly become friend with the other kids on the street, playing games, discussing the happenings in the city in a way only children can, fighting it out with kids from others street. Over the years, you become the leader of your own group of unruly children, the other’s factory brats, some even older than you, gathering around you to form your own clique, in particular, Gustaw, youngest son of your uncle Kazimierz, hung around you a lot, 2 years older than you, he’s been sticking with you since you were a toddler and now continue to clean up your mess when you get in trouble.

Reward: Diplomacy+2, Gain trait Gregarious +2 Diplomacy +1 Intrigue.

Learning: “Those book things look interesting”

[X] Learn Polish – Your mother tongue, of course you can speak it!

    Reward: Speak perfect polish

[X] Learn German – It is the language of the Emperor and the Empire, everyone important speak it, learning it seems like it would be interesting, if only you could find someone to teach you.

    Time: 6 years

DC:10/35/75/100 Cost: None Reward: can speak Germans to varying degrees. Possible Traits. ???

    Roll:58+5=63

It was difficult to find someone to teach you, but one of the soldiers you befriended turned out to be a German, he was quite happy to learn of your interest in what he call “The Imperial language”, and took to teaching you when he had some time, while you are by no means a linguistic genius, you still progressed quite well, by the time you reached six, you could understand most of what was being said in German if people did not speak to fast and speak it in a way that was somewhat understandable, if a bit slow, accented and grammatically incorrect…

The German soldier looked quite pleased with himself, your parents, on the other hand, seemed to have mixed feeling about this.

Reward: +1 Learning, Can somewhat speak and understand German, probably best not to speak it in upper class company just yet.

[X] Learn how to read and write – it is how you put word on papers so that you can see them, according to your mothers. This seems like an absolutely magical thing to you! luckily, both she and your father seem to know how to do it!

    Time: 6 years

DC: Autopass/25/65/100 Cost: None Reward: Varying degrees of mastery over letters. Bonus to Find work action. Possible Traits. ???

    Roll:12+5=18

    This is hard.

You try, you really do, but understanding just seems to slip out of you hand ever so slightly, your mother, who seems to appreciate your interest in learning more than your father and has taken to teaching you , encourage you by saying that others kid your age do not know as much as you do.

But you feel that you should be better than this, other kids may not know as much about Letters than you, but they also do not try nearly as hard.

You are slightly disappointed in yourself.

Reward: Learned alphabet and can read and write a few words.

[X] Learn numbers – Numbers apparently help for many things, like counting people, or money, something really important in short! You’re supposed to learn this in school, but it doesn’t hurt to start early right?

    Time: 6 years

DC: Autopass/25/65/100 Cost: None Reward: Varying degrees of mastery over number. Bonus to Find work actions. Possible Traits. ???

    Roll :99+5=104 (Critical success)

It started easily enough, when you asked to learn numbers on top of Letters, your mother was delighted to teach you, somewhat hoping it would take you away from all your fighting and direct you to a more academic future.

Within a year, you had mastered counting, addition, subtraction and basic geometric shapes, surprising your mother, who quickly ran out of things to teach.

Within the next two years, you manage to infer multiplication and division to a significant extent, this time which not even your parents could do. Your mother was both shocked and excited, even your father looked flabbergasted and they would speak to each other in hushed voice every time you showed them your progress in mathematics.

At some point, they brought you to the Foreman of the factory, and asked you to show him how you did mathematics, he looked quite interested and spoke at length with your parents once he sent you out of his office.

    Turn out numbers are fascinating.

Reward: +4 learning, Trait Mathematical genius +3 learning +2 Stewardship+1 Martial +5 to rolls involving Mathematics. New job option. Stuff happening in the background.

    It is the year 1892.

Your name is Filip Kowalski and those past six years were pretty fruitful for you. You made friends, played outside, got scolded, beat up older boys, got spanked and learned that fighting and mathematic were a lot of fun!

You have been growing pretty well otherwise, you currently tower over everyone your age, easily looking one or two years older, your mother started getting big three years ago, and somehow, you got a little brother some time later. He is chubby, like to follow you around, and look more like your father than you do, your parents named him Albert. Your mother was pretty tired after your brother appeared for some reason; she still doesn’t leave the house often.

Your father on the other hand has been coughing a lot, sometime, you think you see a bit of red on his handkerchief, Mother has been trying to tell him to see a doctor, but your father waved her off, saying that they didn’t have the money to pay the doctor and needed to save for both yours and your brothers tuition fees.

Thankfully, his work quality hasn’t slipped, and the foreman seems to be giving him some leniency.

Speaking of which, the foreman proposed you a job to help with accounting, to make use of your “god given talents” as he put it, he pays well, for a kid, that is. He apparently talked about it to the factory owner, who agreed to give you work.

Unfortunately for you, fun time seems to be at an end, as two major obligation seems to have come down on you this year, first off, you have to go to compulsory school for the next six years, both of your parents have mixed feeling about it, as they understand your talents could bloom if you went, but they remember not learning anything important themselves back when it was them going to school.

Your second obligation isn’t one imposed by the State but by your parents, they want you to attend churches starting now, and not going isn’t an option, your parents are pretty adamant about it, saying that it is important to care for the soul and meet the community.

    5 Actions+ 2 locked.

    Martial:
You’ve defeated every bullies around, “conquered” your part of the city, and all around has a lot of fun, but perhaps there may still be some mayhem to be raised?

    It is the year 1892.

Your name is Filip Kowalski and these past six years were pretty fruitful for you. You made friends, played outside, got scolded, beat up older boys, got spanked and learned that fighting and mathematics were a lot of fun!

You have been growing pretty well otherwise, you currently tower over everyone your age, easily looking one or two years older, your mother started getting big three years ago, and somehow, you got a little brother some time later. He is chubby, likes to follow you around, and looks more like your father than you do, your parents named him Albert. Your mother was pretty tired after your brother appeared for some reason; she still doesn’t leave the house often.

Your father on the other hand has been coughing a lot, sometime, you think you see a bit of red on his handkerchief, Mother has been trying to tell him to see a doctor, but your father waved her off, saying that they didn’t have the money to pay the doctor and needed to save for both yours and your brother's tuition fees.

Thankfully, his work quality hasn’t slipped, and the foreman seems to be giving him some leniency.

Speaking of which, the foreman proposed to you a job to help with accounting, to make use of your “god given talents” as he put it, he pays well, for a kid, that is. He apparently talked about it to the factory owner, who agreed to give you work.

Unfortunately for you, fun time seems to be at an end, as two major obligations seem to have come down on you this year, first off, you have to go to compulsory school for the next six years, both of your parents have mixed feeling about it, as they understand your talents could bloom if you went, but they remember not learning anything important themselves back when it was them going to school.

Your second obligation isn’t one imposed by the State but by your parents, they want you to attend church starting now, and not going isn’t an option, your parents are pretty adamant about it, saying that it is important to care for the soul and meet the community.

    5 Actions+ 2 locked.

In the end, even your teacher was surprised by your progress and nobody could ever tell that you once struggled learning how to write and read.

A lot of what you were supposed to learn in compulsory school, you had already learnt beforehand, has a result, and to the surprise of your teacher, you blew through the grade, in you first year you got an almost perfect score at the end of the year and managed to get to the next grade in only one year... and then proceeded to do the same 4 years in a row.

    War averted!

Despite the increased tension between Spain and the United States over the Cuban revolt following the reporting of Spanish atrocities in the American press and the mysterious explosion of the Maine, it seems that peace will prevail this time, after many negotiations and meetings between President William McKinley and the King of Spain, Alphonse II and his government, the latter has seen fit, in his infinite generosity and wisdom, to recall the Spanish troops present, and recognize the nation of Cuba and the legitimacy of its government.

This development seems to have vindicated the isolationist wing of the United States of America, who now lobby for more isolation and find their support growing amongst the population.
What does this mean for the future? Only God may know.

    "J'accuse!" Scandal in France.

Today, Internationally recognized French writer Emile Zola wrote inflammatory article in French newspaper "L'aurore" denouncing the sentence of Captain Alfred Dreyfus and the acquitting of Commander Esterhazy, calling out the collusion between military and political official in the entire process to suppress their mistakes, the mishandling of justice, and the proof pointing out the treason of the commander, already, the General staff is calling him out for his defamation, with the minister of war, General Billot, already promising legal retribution.

    Interlude:

You are seated in your classroom, listening attentively to Mr. Cieślak lesson on imperial history, your metallic pen scratching the paper of your notebook, the noise one of many in the room, when a knock on the door disturb the studious air of the classroom.

Your teacher stops speaking, glance at the door, a small frown of displeasure on his severe face, before going to open it. At the entryways, in the gap between Mr. Cieślak and the door frame, you catch a glimpse of Ms. Woźniak , the secretary of the headmaster, standing there.

From where you are, you can only catch your teacher's profile, but he seems surprised for an instant, they exchange a few words in hushed voices before the teacher turned toward the students.

“Listen class, I must leave the room to speak with Ms. Woźniakdo. Do not make a ruckus while I am gone, or I’ll have to punish you”

Finished with his warning, he left with the secretary, closing the door behind him as he went.

As soon as he was gone, the room was awash with whispering as everyone started speculating about what was going on as only school children can.

“Do you think they’re here because of the prank Heinrich pulled last week? But I thought no one caught him! Do you think someone tattled? No way! If that happens, we need to teach whoever spoke a lesson!”

“Nah, can’t be, Heinrich is the constable's son anyways, the headmaster wouldn’t get involved unless he did something really terrible.”

“Guys, I know what’s going on, I heard Gustav, was seeing Adelajda, the daughter of the teacher from class three.”

“Hey! Who told you that?! Don’t go spreading it around!”

    “Hahaha”

    …..

And on they went, honestly, it was all pretty dull to you, why waste time wondering about what was going on when you would know in a few minutes? Sweeping your gaze across your agitated classmates, you snorted before concentrating on your notebook making sure you got your dates and historical events right. Nobody spoke to you, they knew better then to bother you when you worked on something, you usually didn’t even bother to acknowledge the person speaking to you.

The hubbub continued for a while, until your teacher abruptly opened the door, standing straight as a pike, gazing at the class in disapproval and stilling it into silence.

He kept the pose for a few moments, only the sound of you turning page disturbing the otherwise perfect silence.

Then he turned to look at you.

“Filip, the Headmaster wants to see you in his office now.”

You blinked, looking up from your books. Even as hushed whispers filled the room once again.

“Silence! I will not have chatterboxes in my class! Now, Filip, follow me.”

You couldn’t help but feel a tinge of worry, you had not picked a fight in a long time, surely, they were not here because of the little trouble you stirred as child? Ah, you thought you had been nothing but a dutiful subject and filial child in those past few years? Perhaps they thought you stained the school's reputation with your previous action.

Even as you doubted yourself, you still got up, towering over your classmates at 160 cm, your body well-muscled for a 12 years old, and followed Mr. Cieślak out of the classroom.

Your teacher did not turn to look at you, but Ms. Woźniak, apparently waiting for you two outsides, flashed you a smile that somewhat assuaged your worries. It couldn’t be that bad if she smiled at you right?

It took you three minutes to get to the headmaster office, the walk was spent in silence, none of you used to small talk.

Once in front of the solid wood door carved with the twin headed imperial eagle of the Principle's office, your nervousness came back to you, your hand sweaty due to the stress.

    The secretary went to knock.

“Headmaster Kaczmarek, Mr. Cieślak and Filip are here.”

“Good, show them in.” answered the gruff voice of the principle.

As you were showed in by a smiling secretary, you immediately noticed the two people in the room.

One was an older man, around 60 years old, wearing an impeccable suit, he was rather corpulent, filling his solid wood chair rather well, his hair had all mostly turned gray, with a few black hair peeking out of his slightly receding hairline, he had an imposing imperial beard, and was puffing on a pipe, the smoke not hiding his bright brown eyes on his wrinkled face.

He was Pietrzak Kaczmarek, the headmaster, and though you had not seen him often, you could still recognize him easily.
The other person was someone you recognized even more easily, wearing cleaned-up work clothes, still taller than you at one meter and seventy centimeter he sat in front of the principle, his build impressive from all the physical word he did, but his face already showing some sign of the exhaustion of life, a few wrinkles accentuating his somewhat tired trait, some gray hair sprinkled here and there, hidden by his dirty blond-hair, he was smiling at you, his head twisted to look at the doorway, his blue eyes looking at you warmly.

    He was your father.

You could only stare, a bit numb about whatever was happening, calling in the parents usually meant things were really, really bad, but once again, he was smiling, so what was going on here?

“Ah, Mr. Cieślak, Filip we were waiting for you. Take a seat, we were just speaking about you with your father.”

I went to sat down to the right of my father; my teacher sat to the left.

“As I was saying earlier Mr. Kowalski, your son results are exceptional in all matters, he is without a doubt one of the best students in our school since its founding, if not the best, he works with a rigor I have rarely seen in…. well, anyone really. This alone would have warranted a scholarship so that he could further his study…but as it happens, Mr. Cieślak noticed the scribble the Filip wrote in his notebook from time to time.”

Your father frowned and you felt yourself sweat even more.

    “Scribble?”

This time it was Mr. Cieślak who spoke out.

“Yes, I thought it was nothing but a young kid passing his time when bored, considering his marks and his usual studiousness, I was only planning to scold him before his classmate, but when I got a closer look, I noticed that were all mathematical formula…”

    He paused.

“Advanced Mathematical formula if I may add, not only for his age, but even for the teaching staff, it was…. difficult to understand, definitely not something I taught.”

The Principle puffed on his pipe a bit, seeming quite happy.

“I took the liberties to send a copy to an old colleague of mine in the university of Vienna… he seemed fascinated at the idea that a 12 years old boy could reach such a level on his own, without anyone to teach him.”

“What?” You croaked out, speaking for the first time since you entered the room.

Your father on the other hand did not seems surprised, his frown smoothed.

“So, it’s about this in the end.”

    The principle chuckles.

“Yes, I expected you would have noticed, there is no doubt about the fact that your son is a true genius of mathematics, my friend and I talked about it for a while, and we managed to not only get a significant royal scholarship for him, but a letter of recommendation, from the headmaster of the Vienna institute to give to any school of your choosing. Let it not be said that the Emperor dislike talented people.”

He looked at you with a smile.

“Shall we speak about your future?”

    Sad Monarchist
Your name is Filip Kowalski, the year is 1898 and you are now on the path to a career as a military officer, your parents are both proud and worried about your decision, worried about the risk of death in battle, and proud that you will become a dashing military officer in the service of his majesty, the Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, your teacher and the principle bemoan your choice, thinking you are wasting your potential in pursuing such a violent occupation and that you would be more suited to scientific study at the university of Vienna, your friends on the other hand, are hardly surprised, knowing that you were of a rather militant nature, both in mind and body, your brother merely congratulated you in his shy, awkward way, happy that you were getting ahead in life.

Those last six years, things went up for the Kowalski family, your family's health has improved greatly compared to before, your father managed to beat the disease with the help of a doctor, going back to work harder than ever and your mother is taking care of your brother’s education, as she did with you, finally recuperating from her pregnancy and socializing with the neighborhood wives once more.

Your brother is growing up to be the complete opposite of you, despite being protected by you in his childhood, or perhaps because of it, he is a shy and rather awkward person, with few if almost no friends, contrary to you, who is growing up to be a massive man with a talent for violence, he is small and mousy, with absolutely no capacity for battle in any form, he is however, quite smart and sneaky. Albert did quite well in his study, even if not as good as you, and seems interested in the career of a civil servant, your father couldn’t help but be exasperated at both of his son’s desire to pursue expensive studies despite the fact that you are a rather poor family.

Of course, considering that you are both talented and capable, he simply cannot bring himself to leave you to live the same live he did.

As for yourself, you are quite proud of the progress you made in the last few years, you advanced by leaps and bounds in writing and reading, eventually reaching a level that made your teacher blush, and earned quite a lot of money for a young child from a working class family using your talents with numbers.

You have unfortunately lost sight of quite a few of your friends from your younger years as a result of your focus on self-improvement and preparation for the future, only your closest friends stayed with you, the ones living in the same worker barrack as you, it saddened you a bit, to see your childhood disappearing like a hazy mirage, but sacrifice must be made for yours and your family future and time has come for you to grow out of the world of children.

Your time in the Church hasn’t only strengthened your faith, it gave you a firmer will, and a better vision of the future.

Of note, your parents expect you to start paying some of your expense now that you are, by all account, an adult capable of working almost any job. Something to take into consideration in the coming years.

It all started with a thought.

It came to you while you were looking over the books, examining the quantity of materials bought, the industrial output, the salaries paid and the number of hours worked, the numbers swirling in your nimble mind told you…That everything was being done in a terribly inefficient manner. The work being done was less “industrial” in its forms and more “artisanal”.

Being the conscientious man that you are, you brought it up to the foreman, who promptly laughed at you, telling you to leave those things to him and keep to your numbers.

And so you did… you spent your time-off observing the work in the factory and converting what you saw into numbers, from the placement of the work benches and machine tool , to who did which work at what time, the skills of which employees, the skill necessary for each steps of production, the resting time and working hour… you observed everything, and then, like one would an equation, you rearranged the numbers into the most efficient and rational form, leaving no unknown behind before presenting your work directly to the owner of the factory.

He spent a long time staring at your work in muted silence and then an even longer time asking you questions, which you answered, before he was finally convinced to try it out.

It was an unmitigated success, before long other businessman were flocking to him to ask how he suddenly grew his production so much.

He strongly advised you to write a book about your work, as he scarcely understands your methods.

Oh, and you blew your actual accounting work out of the water, turn out the foreman was embezzling. That netted you some good bonuses.

As you enter the year 1904 of our lord, you, Filip Kowalski, reflect on the life you lived in the last few years of your youth and the change it bought to you and your family.

Be it work or study, you experienced success after success, you once again took the top spot in the Unterrealschulen and the Oberrealschulen, beating all previous record, you received congratulations and encouragement from the school management, accompanied by an important increase in your royal scholarship, your acceptance into the Theresian military academy was par for the course from there and despite the love call from multiple university throughout the Austrian part of the Empire you stayed the course, firm in your desire for a military life.

Your work on making the steel factory your grew up in and worked at for some time more efficient seems to have gathered quite a bit of interest from industrialists around northern Cisleithania, apparently a similar method was already pioneered by an American named Frederick Winslow Taylor, but information about it are sparse in the Empire and most of Europe, there’s been some measure of interest from some corners of society, mostly from magnates hoping to make more money, but not enough that someone bothered to translate his work in German, let alone polish or Hungarian.

Now that they not only have definite proof of how effective it is, but also an imperial citizen that attained similar results with his own work, people are urging you to publish your efforts to the rest of the Empire, you are starting to be a gather a bit of fame amongst the local elite as a truly outstanding individual with great Talent.

As of now you are moving into the dormitory of the Academy, after years of preparations on your part, you will work hard for 3 years to succeed and get a posting in the K.u.K army as a leutnant, serving in the common army of the Emperor.

Puberty also left you a present…you were always a big child, but once puberty hit, you swelled in every way, shooting past your father and everyone you knew, reaching a staggering 196 Cm, you also started to put on muscle to match your height, despite not training your body, somehow passing Adonis and going straight for Herculean, coupled with your shaggy black hair and beginning of a beard this apparently make you quite popular with women, not that you pay much attention to that . Your family and friends were shocked at your growth, your now slightly on the short side brother being quite jealous of you.

Speaking of your family, both of your parents are now doing really well, if getting a bit older, your father seems to have benefited from your hard work, obtaining raise and bonus despite not doing an especially exceptional work, your mother on the other hand is now mostly free from the duty of raising children and spend her time socializing or sewing, as for your brother, despite being rather weak and sickly he managed quite well in school and benefit from a slowly but steadily expanding circle of friends, he is now already preparing himself to try the impossible and enter the Theresianum in Vienna to eventually work for the government as a civil servant…your father quietly approached you in hope you could help him pay for it, as he absolutely does not make enough money to even think of sending your brother here.

Unfortunately, all is not well for the Kowalski family, as it happened, your father had a rather brutal altercation with some of his fellow workers that had to be broken up by others workers and management employees, He got quite a few bruises and a split lip for his trouble, turn out those fellows were quite avid readers of a certain manifesto, and they took exception to what was going on in your family, namely, both you and your brother decision to work for the “bourgeoisie” and “nobility” in order to oppress the working class, they particularly resent you for your direct work with the factory management and your reorganization of the work, though they don’t really dare to bring it up with you directly, basically, they can see that you are slowly leaving the working class and are reacting according to their ideology.

It doesn’t help that your parents are devout believers.

There is always room for more improvement though…

[X] Mingle with the local soldiery – You’ve spent most of your youth spending time with soldiers, and you now aim to be one, being in Vienna is both a boon and a curse for you, on one hand, you do not have any acquaintance amongst the locals soldiers and must build relationship from scratch, on the other hand, Vienna is the beating heart of the Empire, both the military and civilian side of it, high ranking officers and official concentrate here and the Imperial General staff HQ is present here, both Landwehr and K.u.K troops can also be found in the city, making it the perfect place to learn more about the state of the army and create a personal network.

The time at the academy was more time-consuming than you thought, you did not have the time to seek out enlisted men at their garrisons to speak with them, only managing to engage in discussion with some of soldiers and officers coming around the academy from time to time, you didn't learn much but managed to make a few fast friends amongst them. Strangely enough, the officers you talked with seemed really tired, much more so than the common soldiers.

Result: Acquaintance amongst low level officer and soldiers of the K.u.K.

Diplomacy: Networking is an important part of life, and the higher you wish to go the more important those connection you made are, you never know when one of them might come in handy after all, and know that you are set to enter high society and getting attention from industrialist, it may be more important than ever.

[X] Help your brother – Your brother is aiming for a career as a civil servant, in the empire, that means getting into the Theresianum, unfortunately, not only is it expensive, it is mostly reserved for the bourgeoisie and nobility, making it extremely hard for someone from a working classes like your brother to enter it unless they have truly exceptional results, your father has asked you for help in that regard, your brother being a tad too prideful to do it, not only does he need a large amount of money, but now that you are in Vienna he would appreciate it if you could try and socialize with the upper crust, so that your brother may enter this otherwise rather reserved academy.

    Time: 1 Turn

DC: 45/80/100 Cost: 1000 Reward: Bonus to your brother rolls. Happy father. Networking with the Upper class.

    Roll:44+10=54

Getting involved with the high society wasn't as easy as you expected, you try, you really do, you buy yourself an expensive suit, learn to watch your speech patterns, and lay the flattery as thick as you can, unfortunately, this make you look like a nouveau rich seeking favors...which isn't wrong, the older and higher nobility barely pay you any attention, and the younger nobility, that tend to come from more humble origin, dislike the fawning and despite your recents successes and fame that close you a lot of door, oh, they certainly smile and make polite conversation, but nothing ever come off it.
In the end you do manage to get some help in the form of an old man of jewish descent, one Jakob Klein, that received the Von of nobility through a Knight's Cross of the Order of Franz Joseph-when it was still possible to gain nobility through them- that he received in thanks to his dedicated years of service as a civil servant.
You met him outside the theater of Vienna, after you got gently rebuffed once again after asking for help, he caught you outside, having overheard your conversation, apparently, he was sympathetic to you situation, having himself been in a similar situation than your brother, he had to climb his way up to success from almost nothing.
He said he would help you out, if you agreed on owing a favor.
    You accepted.
Later, Your brother barely managed to clutch his admission.

Result: You owe someone a favor, your brother succeed getting in Theresianum

Stewardship: You are now without a doubt quite good at running thing, your reorganization and rationalization of work has earned you a lot of acclaim, even it is not strictly revolutionary as someone already worked on the subject in the united states, now you have quite a tidy sum of money for an 18 old working-class, but you can always make more and certainly will need more if you want to keep moving up.

[X][Double down]Write a book on Taylorism(Filip Kowalski version) – You’re recent work has earned you a great amount of fame and recognition, and you’ve been pushed to write it down and publish it within the empire so that all may read it.

    Time: 1 Turn

DC: 30 Cost: 50 Krones Reward: Money, Fame.

Roll: 100 Natural crit, boosted by Double down. (QM:I don't even...)

Now, this was your big project in the past two years, you received enough demand from people around you to know that it would be popular, and you needed the money.... and the fame, it would help your career and your family.
So, after buying the necessary supply, you immediately started writing down everything you worked on, the reorganization of work, the method of analysis and rationalization, the ideas of true industrial work, you supplemented it with example and experiment that you did at the factory, after around 8 months, you were done.

As you looked at the results of years of hard work, your first thought was that it was bad, unfinished, unpolished, lazy.
What about surproduction? why did you not think about it? what was the point of ramping up production if no one could buy the product? and so, on top of your existing work, you wrote down a simple theory based on an idea just as simple after thinking hard on it and reading up about the way economy work, cursing your lack of education all the while.

Workers should be paid as if they were going to consume their own productions, because they will, and if they don't, they should.

Then you published it in the language you mastered, Germans, Polish, and Hungarian.

It was an unmitigated success, it first sold in the Empire, amongst German, polish and Hungarian speaking upper class, then it spread across the border, first in Germany, then in Russia, through the small polish speaking upper class that later translated it in Russian, from Germany, it spread to the German speaking minorities across the America and from there, it started selling across the entire developed world, and while this book is rather niche, the sheer size of the market meant that it was sold in great numbers, already, a few adventurous Industrialist are trying out your ideas, it would take years before they were more widely adapted, but it looked to be heading in this direction.

Somehow, the fact that you're only 20 made this even more incredible.

Result: Sold around 400 000 Books across the world, with more to come every years. +1 600 000 millions Krones (around 400K dollars at the time) +500 Fame in Austria-Hungary. +200 Global Fame. Floated Taylorism around.

It was a very entertaining way to pass time

It is now the year 1906, and you, Filip Kowalski, have had a hectic two years, you’ve pushed yourself as you never had before, both physically and mentally, you’ve lived on a nearly twenty hours a day seven days a week schedule, with almost no break, all in order to accomplish the tasks set before you, some people call you mad for it but you simply say that they’re not dedicated enough, what is point of doing something if you do not throw yourselves wholeheartedly into it? You’ve always been like that to an extent, experience merely taught you how to do it more efficiently.

And the results speak for themselves, as you’ve proven by single-handedly raising your family out of poverty thanks to your study on industrial work and economic theory, becoming a best-seller author worldwide and being recognized for your intellectual prowess in certain circles of society, this feat has opened many doors previously closed to you, with some among the Vienna upper class are speaking of granting you a noble title befitting your fame and accomplishment in raising the prestige of the Monarchy.

    It has been a good year for your brother too, he not only entered the Therasianum, but thrived in it, easily keeping up with the top scorer and integrating into the bourgeois and noble crowd, no doubt helped a bit by your newfound fame, he’s also had a late growth spurt, managing to reach a respectable 170cm in his last years of growths, he’s apparently been courting a young woman too, a German from a small landholder family originating from the outskirt of Vienna;

Unfortunately, not all was well this year, your father problems with the Marxist erupted, when three of them tried caught him alone in a corner of the factory, they…well, they tried to kill him for being a “class traitor”, the ensuing struggle was not pretty from what you heard, by the time the others worker broke up the fight two of the men were pretty badly wounded, with one, losing an eye and the others having a broken leg, your father himself suffered from a broken arm, the Gendarmerie got involved and several arrests were made, all in all quite a mess. Though thankfully, your father will heal.

Your brother contacted you about moving your parents to Vienna, now that you have the money, anxious about the escalating violence they are facing back home.

You are quite inclined to listen to him, even if you would rather put the Marxist in front of a firing squad and be done with it.

Further from home, but no less important is the death of the Archduke Otto of Austria, the hedonistic Prince of the Ruling Hapsburg House and second in line for the throne died of syphilis.

Now, this wouldn’t be such a problem usually but as it happens the current Heir, Franz Ferdinand, has terrible relationship with the ruling emperor due to his morganatic marriage and saw his children all but disinherited as a result.

This means that Karl von Hapsburg, from a minor branch of the Hapsburg family and son of the Archduke Otto is now barely two death away from the throne, and he had no education or preparation for it…

    It has been a good year for your brother too, he not only entered the Therasianum, but thrived in it, easily keeping up with the top scorer and integrating into the bourgeois and noble crowd, no doubt helped a bit by your newfound fame, he’s also had a late growth spurt, managing to reach a respectable 170cm in his last years of growths, he’s apparently been courting a young woman too, a German from a small landholder family originating from the outskirt of Vienna;

[X] Look deeper—The Austro-Hungarian military doctrine is something rather common in Europe, it calls for constant aggression, with the belief that morale and spirit is the key to overrun any defense and winning battles, equipment being a somewhat secondary concerns, and while you somewhat agree with them about the importance of such, you’re nursing some doubt; those tactics were created when rifle had a fire rate several times smaller and less accurate than what is currently in circulation, and that’s without going into the advent of maschinengewehr, since you’ll be taking you’re commission within a year, it might be wise to ponder on those matter.

    Time: 2 Turns

DC: 40 Cost: None Reward: Better idea of the Austro-Hungarian war readiness and modern military realities.

Already you find several discrepancies in the tactic of and strategy employed, the rate of fire of modern weapons would make a straight charge an utter massacre, and the amounts of reservists all but make a single decisive battle impossible, you also question the strain that both a large numbers of conscripts and the increased rate of fire would put on the economy.
More specifically to the Empire, talking to your military friends, you've found out a disturbing amount of suicide amongst lower ranked officers, and a somewhat skewed military budget between the national armies and the kaiserlich und königlich with the common army finding itself somewhat anemic.
Your finding already make you a bit jittery, but you feel there is more to find below the surface.
