Looking at the shape of history, I'm actually kinda glad the US didn't win the War of 1812. I think it's a good thing b/c we weren't, as a country, emboldened to go conquering more territory. I don't count the native lands in that b/c they weren't adversaries that really challenged us strategically.

EDIT: @Free-Stater 101 i'll stop here. ;)

War is a military and political affair as the military are the ones that make the politicians able to make thier ideas and arguments.
A war can be one solely by the military, it can not be solely one by tbe politicians
No, war can never be won solely by military, because you win a war by achieving political objectives through usage of military power.

To use Ukraine as example - had Russian political leadership decided to merely occupy Crimea and perhaps parts of Donbass, they will have basically won the war long time ago. But because their politicians decided to try and install a puppet regime in Ukraine, Russia has placed itself in a situation where military victory is extremely unlikely.

If you try to decouple warfare and politics, you will lose because your army will be left running around like a headless voodoo chicken, unable to decide what and how to do.

At first glance - "sheetmetalgiven".
Hmm - at second glance, the "h" would be "g" in other Slavic languages, so "generouslygiven"? "Nobelygiven"?
In the post-Soviet era apparently a lot of towns that got renamed to Soviet things got renamed to this. Not sure why they didn't revert to their older names but that's their business.

Wikipedia suggests that the Russian equivalent is Blagodatnoye (Russian: Благодатное)

its almost as if Russians had nothing to gain if they destroyed their own dam
Preventing a Ukrainian offensive
Not just preventing an offensive below the dam, but utterly fucking the agricultural capabilities of all of southern Ukraine, including Crimea, for at least a decade due to cutting off water from the canals that came out of that lake, and endangering the long-term ability of at least one nuke plant to operate at any real capacity.

This was a scorched earth tactic meant to ensure that even when Russian forces are push out of Ukraine, the damage done to the nation will leave Ukraine crippled and reliant on possibly 'fickle' foreign aid for decades to come in order to rebuild.

Russia is such a steaming pile of shit, isn’t it? All its movements now seem to be motivated by spite instead of victory.

Ah yes, the neoliberal concept that anyone who opposes them is either irrational, stupid or evil.
