Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a discussion thread and retrospective

Clownfish TV has a pretty good pulse on what's going on in the multimedia world, especially Disney, since they are, or claim to be former Disney employees in the media branch.

Another good channel on Youtube to get some "insider" news and discussions is Midnights Edge.

Been watching them too. Good stuff. I've since ditched Mike Zero as he doesn't seem to know what the hell he's talking about.

And now the requisite tell-all book comes out.

To be fair, the idea he was only toxic to pretty women has been disproven by other actors accounts on set. Like the way he treated James Marsters according to his interviews.

Try Overlord DVD aka Doomcock, and The Critical Drinker.
Just Some Guy and Raging Golden Eagle are good, too, although JSG focuses mainly on comic books and LotR stuff.
RGE is a weeb that basically does on-air verbal shitposting commentary on the news while shilling his own art projects.
Come to think of it, didn't a guy with an avatar very similar to his shitpost on SB once upon a time?

I definitely watch Doomcock and Critical Drinker.

Some more details on the tell-all book, and Sarah Michelle Gellar admitting there was friction on the set between the actors. I think that tends to happen somewhat with any “young adult” tv show though. Then again, Joss didn’t help at all.

Why does anyone care about decades-old drama surrounding the shooting of this series?

Uh, gossip I suppose? But more interest to fans of the show like myself, especially in light of the details of the shows creator Joss Whedon that came out, plus how that affected many of the actors and actresses on set.

Also, I suppose I should add that YES, indeed I am a dirty old man who's very hetro who loves shows with lots of hot girls in them. Naughty and scandalous, I know.

The only gossip I care about where that show is concerned involves pictorial recordings of Alyson Hannigan's or Charisma Carpenter's ass clad in yoga pants while she is doing pilates.
Maaybee Sarah Michelle Geller can be there, too.

Uh, okay? Didn't need to know that, but hey, to each their own I suppose...

TBH some eye candy plus cheesy action and stupid teen shenanigans was what made Buffy interesting for most people, it is not like it is a deep, philosophical tract or even all that original.

I mean the premise is Cheerleader stakes vampires at night.

And Joss Whedon's stuff could, IMHO be classified into three different cathegories:
1. generic
2. outright ripoff(Firefly being heavily "inspired" by Outlaw Star, and I got a pretty strong La Femme Nikita vibe from Dollhouse)
3. fan service:

Oh, to be sure, eye candy was a large part of it, hence the following among a lot of males, me included. No argument there at all.

Buffy in some ways, arguably, WAS in fact original for it's time (late 1990s), as it was about a stereotypical blonde girl (at least on the surface) who would be the victim in any number of horror or slasher flicks, but instead was being the heroine and killing monsters. The setting taking place in your average American high school which was not shy about showing how much HS sucked for many, including myself. Yes, I know there's worst things, but it was hardly an enjoyable experience.

It was hardly a deep philosophical tract of any sort, no matter how much some BTVS fans might claim (sorry folks), but the dialogue and particularly the characters, especially in the earlier seasons were quite witty and enjoyable. The show sadly seemed to begin to sputter a bit around Season 5, then went downhill in Season 6.

As far as Whedon's stuff....well, I can only speak for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Never really cared for, or got into his other stuff like Firefly, Dollhouse, etc. I tried though. Firefly just felt a bit too goofy for me, and Dollhouse, didn't care for the premise. YMMV, of course.

Dunno, it is confirmed that the guy is a closet Weeb, so he probably had exposure to a lot of the vsrious girls with guns animes of the 80s and 90s, too.

As well as all the Japanese Female delinquent in schoolgirl uniform with superpower-like abilities fights baddies type movies.(Can't remember the genre name, but KlK is basically a homage to it.Kenny Lauderdale on YT has a few videos covering the subject.)

Also, the whole Cheerleaders vs. Vampires has the distinct smell of a 50s to 80s B-movie or dime pulp novel.

EDIT:

There's an entire genre's worth of these shows where schoolgirls with long skirts & bad attitudes fight people. No anime this time, instead it's a series review about Japanese tv from the 80s. Japanese delinquents, drama, & fight scenes abound, in this kenny lauderdale retrospective on the Sailor Suit Rebel Alliance. Why watch anime when you can see idols in costumes mess with ultraman instead? This j-drama is currently not lost media. If you search the name セーラー服反逆同盟 you can probably find some clips. Sailor fuku hangyaku doumei also works. The sailor suit rebel alliance is part of the same genre as shoujo Commando Izumi, Hana no asuka gumi, & the other Japanese series I've covered, so if you've seen those retrospectives you should know what to expect.
