Also known as "Mainstream Media shocked that the Pope is Catholic." Every so often the Pope says something which reminds the MSM that he is in fact a Catholic, if a rather liberal one. This is one of those moments. In particular, however, for Francis, this is a very strong condemnation and one that the modern world sorely needs right now; and of course he also dared reiterate Catholic teaching on the nature of family, as well:

Pope Francis compared having an abortion to avoid birth defects to the Nazi era idea of trying to create a pure race.

Speaking to a delegation of Italy's Family Association in Rome on Saturday, he also reiterated the Roman Catholic belief that a true human family is comprised of a man and woman.

"I have heard that it's fashionable, or at least usual, that when in the first months of pregnancy they do studies to see if the child is healthy or has something, the first offer is: let's send it away," Pope Francis was reported as saying.

"I say this with pain. In the last century the whole world was scandalized about what the Nazis did to purify the race. Today we do the same, but now with white gloves."

The Nazi quest for a pure race by only allowing healthy children to be born was known as Nazi eugenics. It included abortion and the sterilization of people with physical and mental illness.

In addition to his comments on abortion and fetal testing, Pope Francis made clear what he believes the definition of a human family should be.
"Today, it is hard to say this, we speak of 'diversified' families: different types of families. It is true that the word 'family' is an analogical word, because we speak of the 'family' of stars, 'family' of trees, 'family' of animals ... it is an analogical word. But the human family in the image of God, man and woman, is the only one. It is the only one. A man and woman can be non-believers: but if they love each other and unite in marriage, they are in the image of God even if they don't believe, " the Pope said.

His comments come after Argentina, his home country, voted in favor of a bill that would legalize abortion as early as 14 weeks of pregnancy and ahead of his trip to Ireland in August for the World Meeting of Families.

If you truly believe that abortion is murder, then there are numerous modern nations that make the Nazis look like rank amateurs when it comes to killing. Over 50 millions abortions have been done in the USA since Roe vs Wade. Around the world 50 million abortions have been happening every year for decades.

As much as I don't want to toss around comparisons to Nazism that makes sense. It is pretty horrible when you actually think about it.

This seems remarkably unsurprising from the perspective that views abortion as the objectionable and unjustified elimination of a human life. Desttoying such a life because of defects that may be in place is no more (perhaps even less) justified than for other reason.

There is a divider here, in that scientific health advancements that can modify genes to make the childs' lives better are more than justified--and some extremists may take that too far while ignoring the benefits.
But yes, abortion based on deformities are as unjustifiable as based on socioeconomics or other factors by that worldview. I dunnow if I agree with it, but that's a reasonably logical progression.

Abortion is the single most successful idea of both eugenicist and white supremacist ideology in America. It's ironic that the left who champion it, when not saying anything other than womens rights, will repeat the same talking points as these two groups in affirmation of it.

I thought abortion was a thing long before the Nazi’s, but much bloodier and involved using poisons

It's been a relatively minor thing for a very long time. But not the kind of mass abortion we have now. To make it clear, just look at how many black abortions are estimated. It's massively reduced their population as they have abortions at three times the average rate of others. The population reduction from it is insane.

I think it’s a little bit bizarre that aborting a fetus with severe deformities is seen as worse than aborting a fetus purely for convenience.

Probably because it would seem discriminatory

Then again, I don’t think the Far Left really thinks that much in-regards to the disabled and genetically physically deformed

It’s more about gender, race and religion(preferably Islam, the Dhalai Lhama is a Nazi now)these days that they really focus on. Even the working class aren’t guys they fetishize so much.

Convenience is worse but both are pretty bad.

You can at least craft a moral argument for abortion of a profoundly deformed child, with, say, Down’s syndrome. The idea of abortion for convenience is, on the other hand, something even Hannibal Lecter would probably find repugnant. I am trying to imagine something more morally repugnant than that left-wing comedienne who was boasting about how getting an abortion for convenience made her feel like a Goddess, and was falling badly short—I’d sooner die than give someone like that a dime of my money.

Well, it IS a “progressive talking point” because Pro-Choice just means that there’s only one choice in the end

And you just have to boast about it to the world because you know you will receive praise for it

The praise of people, I think, especially from complete strangers is something people live for

Well, its a natural outcome really. "Abortion should be safe, legal and rare" well, you have to justify why it should be rare, you have to acknowledge it as a bad thing, and it can only be a bad thing if a fetus has value. That is very different from "tumor" and "clump of cells" which are the current talking points.

Francis may be a closeted follower of Liberation Theology, but the man is still a Christian. Of course he condemned abortion, though I'm personally quite impressed that he had the stones to compare it to Nazism.

Abortion relies desperately on the notion that the fetus is not a person. If you can attribute any humanity to the unborn than the entire argument for Abortion, the protection of the mother, dies both legally and philosophically. Wolfe, the woman you're referring to, is either the kind of deviant hedonist the moral guardians of the past warned us about, or she's a broken woman desperately trying to justify her lifestyle to herself and those around her. I'm not quite jaded enough to think its the former.

Abortion is evil and deep down everyone knows it, it's antithetical to everything that makes a person human, but it has become a cornerstone of a perverse 'feminist' theology that seeks to commodify women as just more productive gears in an all-consuming system. One where motherhood is inconvenient to the totalitarian control of every part of an individual's life. Without an entire society's worth of propaganda and reinforcement, I don't think it would be quite so enshrined and I do think it's fated to die.

If only because any society the routinely culls it's own young will be washed away by those that don't.
