Coup in Mali

I thought,that Wagner are competent....

Similar thing happened in Mozambique several years ago. Wagner mercenaries kept on getting caught in ambushes perpetrated by the local Islamic State militants and eventually Wagner pulled out. They apparently offered their services at a far lower rate then competing South African security contractors. Afterwards, the Mozambican government went with the South African mercenaries after all that.

Maybe they send to Africa worst elements and thought, that for africans it would be enough? becouse on Ukraine they were competent.

If I were Ukraine, I'd seriously think about doing the same. Wagner is a group that brings in funds to Russia. Wagner is a military force that Russia will likely bring back against Ukraine once Russia can get some guarantees of loyalty inside Wagner's leadership.

Might as well work to demean both of those things.

Yes and Wagner/Russia likely thought the area would be somewhere they could gain benefit with little risk and Ukraine is attempting to bork that up by divesting some SOF Advisors to introduce new capabilities to the adversaries of the Wagner backed forces in the area.

There were also reports of something similar going on in Sudan as well but I never bothered posting on it since I wasn't sure on things. But there were rumors and reports of Wagner supposedly backing the RSF in that conflict and then being exposed to previously rare in the conflict, FPV style drone strikes.

Now Wagner operations in Africa can be threatened by Ukraine now.

It's likely many of the Tuareg factions in Mali are benefiting from French assistance in regards to recon and Intel as well.

Apparently the Convoy that was ambushed also had support from Helicopter Gunships and possibly one of the Mi-24's was shot down. Video of some of it is out there. More graphic stuff elsewhere.

Also the engagement had been going on for five days and the Russians, despite supposedly having 1000-2000 troops in the area plus local forces, were unable to rescue the surrounded convoy.

They could not save convoy, when it fight for 5 days? what is wrong with those guys?

I'm betting they sent in some CAS in the way of gunships that got target and possibly shot down. Then they saw the numbers that were attacking, and chose to not send more into the grinder for fear they'd lose more troops to ambushes.

A large enemy formation all gathered in one area would be something they'd target with artillery. Maybe they did not have enough.

I doubt it was any sort of 'formation' that was easily targetable by indirect fire.

Then add in that the surrounding region was definitely not under the control of Wagner...hell, I don't even know if Wagner possesses any Artillery that could have range to the combat site.

Yeah, what artillery? They have mortars maybe. Have you seen the stuff Russia is desperate enough use in Ukraine? You think they would send perfectly good 155mm SPGs or Tornado-S to Africa while at it?
They probably use old Hinds that are of little use in Ukraine except for padding the resumes of western MANPADS on the logic that they can provide just enough of fire support for local needs while some dirty rebels probably don't have any decent AA, and they may be right most of the time, after all a Hind can stand taking a little lucky HMG fire. But this time they turned out wrong...

It's a pretty serious loss proportionally as well since it's estimated Wagner has maybe a thousand or maaaaybe up to two thousand mercenaries in the region. Possible losses of ten percent of your entire force in one battle isn't good.

And there you have an explanation why their combat experience in Ukraine does not apply too well in Mali.

A few days ago ASS (Alliance of Sahel States) and Wagner have retaliated against the Tuaregs by bombing an artisanal mine in Northern Mali close to the border of Algeria located within Tuareg controlled territory. Many dozens were allegedly killed or wounded in what Russian sources are stated was a strike against a terrorist stronghold.

So far only migrant miners from various Muslim North African states have been reportedly killed or wounded as the strikes from the Drones apparently hit the mine and a refugee camp which are far more easy to strike then anything of military value.

A good biased timeline (in French) of the recent clashes that led to the Wagnerites being ambushed and the retaliatory drone strikes against civilians.

Guess those Russian Prisoners are going to be enjoying Tuareg hospitality for the foreseeable future.

Several years after releasing his unexpectedly extremely popular video on France's Operation Serval in Mali, Battle Order released a new video on Mali, this one covering Mali's Mighty Armored Armed Forces!

And he adds in a bit of context pointing out the geopolitical situation in Mali, the factions and threats involved and everything that has developed since the withdrawal of first French, American and UN Forces for Russian/Wagner support.
