Rest In Peace Deaths Of Note

His health had been declining for the past few years and from what I've heard, he said last words in native German language before he passed away.

Had a grandfather who was just a year older when he passed in July, so the idea that “Anything can happen!” at Benedict’s age is one I understand well.

Just lamenting that he didn’t get to celebrate New Year’s Day before leaving us — not to mention what a “bittersweet” set of days December 31st and January 1st will be for his loved ones from now on as they commemorate his death. :(

I've heard that the Vatican is anticipating tens of thousands to attend the funeral service tomorrow.

The US's oldest living person Bessie Hendricks passed away at age 115:

May she RIP. :(

Pretty damn amazing to come that far!

Heartbreaking for her loved ones, unfortunately, but at least she went out after enjoying an exceptionally long life. If there’s an afterlife, then I hope it’s treating her well — and that I can look forward to the same when it’s finally my turn to join her.

Yeah, she died earlier than I thought she would, but at least she reached age 115 and the year 2023!

How old did you predict she’d make it to, just out of curiosity?

Checking her bio, it said her birthday was November 7th, so even though she turned 115 a few months before passing, it would’ve been nice to see her reach 116 later this year. Oh, well; probably a pedantic distinction in the grand scheme of things, seeing as one more birthday makes minimal difference.

Condolences to the family.

I thought that she had at least several months left in her, maybe even a year or more but at least several months. She did not strike me as being near-death yet. Though at that age, anything can happen extremely rapidly. Walter Breuning, for instance, was in great shape a month before his death and yet declined and died very rapidly. This occurred more than a decade ago.

Bessie Hendricks reminds me of Valentine Ligny, who also reached age 115 but died shortly afterwards. They died almost exactly one year apart as well:
