Declining Comicbook Art-Standards

I haven’t exactly been there for every art transition, but I gotta ask, does anybody think that art starting from maybe the 90s became sorta more and more varied and sorta cheaper?

I mean I’ve read things like Marvel Masterworks and stuff from earlier times and I think art back then was more homogenic in a way, but at the same time still detailed or closer to human bodies

Before the comicbook pages started feeling glossy, maybe?

The guy from this vid says that a lot of earlier comicbook artists actually went to art school and there may have been more of some “dynamic” to the stuff they made

Not sure, but what are your thoughts?

It depends. My brother is in art school, and loves comics, but in his opinion (and he goes full art snob here, be warned) all of the marvel comics and DC comics are trash. The good comics all come from Paris and Belgium, and perhaps the rest of Europe.

Yeah, europeans tend to put way more time and effort to their art

Ever read Delcourt-Soleil’s Elfes Et Neins

Still, I think art for Western-American Comics really has declined or changed with time, it doesn’t help they’re cheap in terms of pay apparently

Well, the cheap in regards to pay thing would do it, as that would mean that good artists would take different jobs. Also, note that a lot of good artists with good ideas are going into webcomics, so it's not all dead.

There’s also stuff like nepotism, people trying something new but not quality checking, low expectations for sales to begin with, no real competent editors etc

Technology shouldn’t be crutch, it should be reason to be more ambitious and competent as there are people who will combine skills with technology to produce something greater
