Recently announced a few hours ago, the Biden Administration will be pursuing a Diplomatic Boycott of the 2022 Beijing Olympics. No Biden Diplomatic Officials will attend the games, but the athletes and the like can still freely participate.

What purpose would an actual Olympic boycott do anyway? Nothing, except ruin the dreams of athletes who dedicated their lives to go to the Olympics.

The Soviet Union was terrible, but Carter pulling us out of the Olympics was one of the biggest asshole moves of his presidency.
To China? A lot. They are engaged in economic warfare with us. Depriving them of a way to advertise and pulling back from being economically entangled with them is a good thing.

It would be an almost entirely empty gesture that would only hurt good people. There are a billion other ways for us to withdraw from them economically without ruining an Olympics.

Leaving aside it's interesting how your Libertarianism went out the door on this issue, can you explain to us diplomatic officials not attending the Olympics prevents China from doing advertising and untangles us economically?

I'm not particularly supportive of an athlete boycott myself either. It's a failed policy that hails back to the 1980 and 1984 Olympics. Neither of those boycotts actually did anything. The Soviets still invaded Afghanistan and the Soviet Reprisal Boycott was even more pathetic.

BTW I feel this is independent of whether one thinks the Olympics in general is shit or not, that's a separate issue.

While it might be seen as an empty gesture, it is because it is purely symbolic. But it is a snub to the Chinese. Maybe more can be done, maybe there's a mechanism to ask US businesses to boycott these games or something? I don't know if such a thing is pausible or what it would look like. I wouldn't be against it if there was a method of doing so. But I would agree that disentangling from the Chinese, including economically, is a laudable goal.

It is more of a finger tk the Chinese saying "We won't send a diplomatic group".
Remeber, North Korea sent a team before wkth one of thier leaders when they send them.

I feel it is useless but it shows the government won't condone it.

Sending athletes at least let's them compete for something they have been training for thier wholeblives basically

Oh, the diplomatic officials do nothing, the athletes would matter. I was talking about an actual olympic boycott.

First, the Chinese people would actually notice, which would be something. Second, a lot of Americans aren't free to speak out against China. Giving them a shield like this to speak out matters, in contrast to the USSR days when that wasn't an issue.

What would be a real meaningful statement?

If American athletes, while in China, openly spoke out about the crimes of the CCP.

It'd take a hell of a lot of courage, and they might face very real consequences, but that would actually have some impact.

Actually, we should let our athletes go.

We should diplomatically boycott them.

AND we should make sure that the Olympics are NOT televised or carried at all in the US. We should just air what's really going on in China during those time slots. Start with all the crap Mao did and transition into the current evils and ills of China. End up with the threat posed by China to the free world. (Of course, this is a pipe dream that none of the networks will actually do.)

This should be a full boycott, not this half assed bullshit.

Disentangling from China in every way possible is the only sane measure we can take as a nation.

There will be other Olympics for athletes to compete at, they can wait a few years for the sake of our countries future.

I mean, can they wait a few years?
