Dune part 2

The Dune saga is a warning about relying on great people to solve problems.

As much as I do like Dune, through the ideas of Frank Herbet it is built on a comically liberal misunderstanding of history. Only men like Paul Atreides can turn the wheels of history.

Like the David Lynch adaption (which was also used as a base for Westwood Studios' Dune 2000 and Emperor), I've always liked looking at the different art styles. Is there a book on the new Dune's art, or am I stuck looking at the film's scenes?

Fun fact sand worms are not native to Arrakis and are in fact an invasive species.
Was that in one of the later Dune novels by Frank, one of the odd prequels, or the "sequel" shit written by his son and about three other people?

Not exactly sure . Looking it up apparently Children of Dune has Leto II mention that eons ago sandtrout were brought to a lush, green, wet Arrakis and they transformed it into a desert.

Um, yes? That was even a thing in-universe, if you read the novels right to the very end. The problem was that despite what rationality and the lessons of history teach them, Humans love strong leaders and visionary figures. Leto II thus intended the Golden Path to not just free Humanity from the trap of prescience, but also to teach Humanity fear and loathing for the notion of another messianic god-king. Or, if the lesson failed to stick - since Leto II could no longer see past the end of the Golden Path thanks to the spread of the no-gene - then the Scattering, i.e. the dispersal of Human populations beyond the boundaries of known space, would ensure that even if other god-kings arose in the future, they would never actually be able to rule all of Humanity.

Paul was afraid/selfish in not wanting to go down the Golden Path, but his son and daughter, especially his son, took up the mantle, IIRC? It's been years since I've read them.

A naive hope to my mind.

There will always be Caesars or Shahanshahs, even if they aren’t called that. Somebody rules at the end of the day.

That aside, we must remember the Golden Path is effectively a madman’s drug infused vision of the future for which billions ended up dead, so I don’t take it too seriously.

Of course.Look what Napoleon ,or Alexander the Great did: created myths of great man capable of making pervest world - but not only failed to deliver such world themselves, but created million of would-be Napoleons/Alexanders who tried and failed even more miserably then them.

And,even if they succed and create perfect empire for few generations,it would fail, becouse it would depend on genius to leading it.And,average rulers are not geniuses.

Polish nationalists after WW1 opposedPiłsudzki not only becouse he was socjalist, but also becouse he used "great man" myth, when problems must be solved by normal people, not choosen geniuses.

Yeah, which is why - like I said - Leto II engineered the Scattering. So when new tyrants appear, they won't have nearly the same degree of all-encompassing power that he had possessed, simply because there'd be no telling how many and exactly where all the various Human-settled worlds in the universe were.

iirc it was a dig at Isaac Asimovs Foundation and Psychohistory.

Speaking of which, funny thing is, IIRC Leto II actually ascribed to a similar mentality with regard to intelligent machines as the 40k Mechanicum. That is, if machines cannot be trusted to think for themselves, and purely Human bodies are too limited, then why not merge both? Put the Human element at the heart of the machine, and break the limitations of the Human form with mechanical augmentation?

Leto II actually favored the Ixians (which inspired the Mechanicum meta-wise) because of that, since they found ways around the proscriptions of the Butlerian Jihad by means of cybernetics in place of pure machine thinking.

The problem with this, Leto was genuinely doing a great job. His Wormyness banned ursery and maintained a currency backed by a hard value*, had politicizing pseudohistorians burnt at the stake atop pyres of their own propaganda** and recognized that giving dissidents wives and families under the status quo meant they now had reason to support it***.

During the landsraad and later, Leto's empire, space travel was limited to a finite bubble of territory surrounding Arrakis, since a ship had to carry enough melange to sustain its Navigator both ways. After the Scattering, Ixian Navigation Machines and synthetic Melange produced in Axlotl Tanks broke this monopoly and allowed people to colonize everywhere. The idea being, that eventually new colonies would be being established at a rate faster than existing colonies could be conquered or destroyed, therefore, it'd be impossible for anyone to rule everyone.

God Emperor of Dune by Frank Herbert said:
Leto's shout had shaken him back into his role as Commander of the Royal Guard. Idaho knew about the economics of the Empire, simplified in the extreme: no interest charges permitted; cash on the barrel head. The only coinage bore a likeness of Leto's cowled face: the God Emperor. But it was all based on the spice, a substance whose value, though enormous, kept increasing. A man could carry the price of an entire planet in his hand luggage.

God Emperor of Dune by Frank Herbert said:
Sisters Chenoeh and Tawsuoko have returned safely from Arrakis to report confirmation of the long– suspected execution of the nine historians who disappeared into his Citadel in the year I of Lord Leto's reign. The Sisters report that the nine were rendered unconscious, then burned on pyres of their own published works. This conforms exactly with the stories which spread across the Empire at the time. The accounts of that time were judged to have originated with Lord Leto himself.
Sisters Chenoeh and Tawsuoko bring the handwritten records of an eyewitness account which says that when Lord Leto was petitioned by other historians seeking word of their fellows, Lord Leto said: “They were destroyed because they lied pretentiously. Have no fear that my wrath will fall upon you because of your innocent mistakes. I am not overly fond of creating martyrs. Martyrs tend to set dramatic events adrift in human affairs. Drama is one of the targets of my predation. Tremble only if you build false accounts and stand pridefully upon them. Go now and do not speak of this.”

“So you give us the Fish Speakers.”
“And a hierarchy you can identify without any mistakes.”
“A female army,” Idaho muttered.
“The ultimate male–enticing force,” Leto said. “Sex always was a way of subduing the aggressive male.” “Is that what they do?”
“They prevent or ameliorate excesses which could lead to more painful violence.”
