Russian naming convention honestly isn't too different from the American style, just semi-backwards.
Instead of M4 Carbine you get AKM, which basically is an abbreviation of 'Modern Automatic Kalashnikov'
RPD being "Degtyaryov handheld machinegun", and SVD being "Dragunov Sniper Rifle" and so on.

The only issue is you need to know Russian to understand them. X_X

But yeah you won't get much penetration with 7.62x39, even with exotic rounds. .223 will kick it's ass in penetration any day of the week.

The poison gas might work. Saturation bombing is what woke them up though. The former is something that might be more practical for the NCR, Legion or House to use to prevent them from tunneling to the Mojave and spreading out. I have to wonder why Tunnelers are more of a problem then the Cazadores... though I realize the latter are probably just too docile and curious and peaceful to be a threat to Mojave ecology or to counter the vicious Tunnelers. Sad.

Anyway what solution can you guys think of to deal with the Tunnlers?
Nothing, because they're basically a mary-sue critter written to canonically end the franchise as Chris wants.
They're numerous beyond count, strong enough to tear anybody to shreds and can appear anywhere, they win, end of story.

Hmm what if you get a couple NCR Rangers to drop some Sierra Madre Mist bombs in their tunnels where they breed?

Nothing, because the NCR aren't aware they exist and are actively collapsing in real time, not to mention you can't make a mist-bomb because it corrodes all known materials including Saturnite.

The Holographic Army might be a good counter to the Tunnelers as well, especially if you can deploy the emitters on a mobile platform of some sort to get deep in the tunnels. The Tunnelers get scared off by bright lights such as flashbangs and flares and obviously fire, so holograms might be a good choice. Otherwise bots equipped with flamers and flashbangs and built in floodlighting/intense lighting for defense and whatnot could do some damage if they can find them.
