Fallout Fallout General Thread - War, War Never Changes. Nor do game engines.

I mean, plenty of mods add to it, and there is a new DLC sized mod that came out recently.
Another one is in the works.
The settlement building is great especially with mods.
The minuteman annoying is stupid and iirc there are mods that fix that
You can't just say 'mods will fix it'.
Mods don't make a bad game excellent, they make a bad game passable. They enhance what was there. If the foundations are rotten, the structure will be as well.
And few want to spend a whole day sorting out their mod-list to play the outstanding...Fallout4 main questline involving factions that make no sense. X_X

Honestly the story isn't that bad honestly.
It's just the minutemen are annoying.
Outside of that, what mods do is add to the game.
The basis of a very good thing is there, woth weapons and everything, settlements, but it is when you add to those that it gets better.

The game isn't horrible, it is fun for an FPS RPG.
Can do many replays like all Bethesda games.

Mods add more though. Like weapons, and there are mods that are working OK making previous fallout games to 4.
Like FO4 NV.
Or FO4 Capital Wasteland.

He'll, the modding community has made it possible for a lot in jist reskins with the old textures

Come onnnnnnnnnnnnnn! I'll accept that you find it enjoyable, and that's fine. But lets look at it objectively compared to previous stories in famous video games.
The institute, who's plan is to...Do...Something! By replacing everybody! And releasing Supermutants...Where did they even get FEV?...
Are synths human? Are they robots? Why don't they get effected by disease, radiation, or aging? Hell why don't they need to EAT?
The institute canonically breaks the laws of thermodynamics and they use this amazing gift AS A FUCKING GLORIFIED ROOMBA. They have gen 3 synths doing manual labor!
That's just the tip of the iceberg as well.

The Synths are synthetic humans, built from mostly organic components in a lab/factory. So it is best to call them robots, the OG Robots from RUR. Which were infact synthetic humans. Well Gen3 are. The earlier Generations are mechanical, but seem to mimic biological life in some regard?

Them having all those weird traits doesn't make much sense. Though, maybe disease and aging can be explained by them be specifically engineered to have strong immune responses and not to age at all (using mechanisms from other species).

But, yes, you are correct. It doesn't make much sense. I can hazard a guess to FEV- that the CIT was running black projects for the Enclave and had it already, or had the connections to find it. But that is still iffy.

As for the Roombamen, I have a more believable explanation. They are a bunch of Ivory Tower "intellectuals" with their heads lodged firmly up their asses. "Intellectuals" as they aren't even smart enough to be pseudo.

They have flesh, blood, bones, the only part that appears non-human is a small chip in their brain. But they're also programmed. But they also have a mind of their own.
Then they're treated as both people and machines by varying people to muddy the waters further.
It's just so fucking weird that in order to 'perfect' the synth, they create...A human. If you want a robot, MAKE A ROBOT. DON'T MAKE WEIRD IMMORTAL ENERGY PRODUCING HUMANS.

I don't plan to get the gog.com in the traditional sense, also want to take advantage of the mods yes.
So I have literally nothing stopping me.
It has very clear flaw with the dilution of many elements but it is still enjoyable. I will certainly remove the parts are not so much like Preston Garvey wanting a settlement liberated every time.

Synth=Synthetic Human. So, of course that creating Humans built in a lab/factory would be perfecting it. When making something synthetic you are going to want to make it as close to natural as possible, and if possible, close to natural as possible- while being better. In a sense, Mankind Redefined.

Again, as I said the OG Robots were Synthetic Humans. I am reasonably sure that the writers knew this, and did their build-a-bear Synths intentionally.

And I'd say that them being treated differently by different people is Bethesda actually attempting to write realistically and properly. People are going to have a range of opinions, just look at historical opinions on slavery when it was practiced- especially in its heyday. Remember, one of the greatest Western philosophers, Aristotle, believed that some men actually were fit by nature to be slaves.

I know the writing is bad, but I am trying to explain where they seem to be coming from and provide justification that you can use to make it seem less silly. And of course explain what actually isn't silly and stupid.

If the foundations are rotten, the structure will be as well.
The thing is that even Fallout 4 has good foundations, if of different character than 3/NV or the TES titles. For quite a lot of things, it's a better foundation because the settlement and weapon crafting systems can be readily reused to do a lot with relative ease compared to the shenanigans it takes to get that fluidity into prior Bethesda titles. Pretty much all the foundation issues are technical debt from building on the Gamebryo engine for 20 years.

The structure built on that foundation, however, manages to be eye-searing without paint, and the garage ("main" story) is condemned for water damage.

The foundation, the most important parts of the game which you build off of, are totally rotten.

No more skill points, SPECIAL has been gutted, perks are level-gated even harder than any other fallout game, armor mechanics use the weirdo-skyrim system instead of DR/DT, and generally it's just another FPS with RPG-lite mechanics, instead of being an RPG with FPS mechanics.

I mean for fuck sake even the dialogue system is completely assblasted, nobody can tell what the heck your character is about to say, skill checks are almost all gone (entirely replaced with Charisma checks), and the story is crap.
How can a game have good foundations when it's limited by
1: A shite game engine that barely works at the best of times
2: Terrible combat mechanics
3: Terrible story
4: Terrible RPG mechanics

In which way could the game be argued to be good, objectively? It didn't even have good graphics for the time, and ESPECIALLY now it looks dated.

Settlements and crafting is neato, until you realize settlements are more of a chore than an engaging mechanic (ahh yes my 100 defence base with 4 deathclaw pets and a bunch of turrets was damaged by raiders, SUREEEEEEEEEE).

And Crafting is just a cheeky way of level-gating damage boosts, and you ALWAYS will use the best weapon you can, so it's just weapon skills with extra steps and more hassle.

It's also immersion breaking as hell. Want to know how much damage skills added in FO1-2? ZERO PERCENT. It made you more accurate. New Vegas is guilty of this as well, to a lesser extent though.

So we're expected to believe that some ex-frozen chucklefuck can somehow make a gun propel a bullet twice as fast using little more than a typewriter, a soda can, and some cornstarch.

Edit: God I neglected to mention that getting the 'complete package', with all the creation club nonsense is going to cost a fortune as well, because while you can buy a FO4 key for chump change, creation club is all first party gated...

I like to think that energy weapons were the shit, but most of them have degraded so much over two centuries that they're not nearly as effective as they once were.
A lot of energy weapons (the majority, really) are either newly built after the war, or refurbished models prewar.
The only places with pre-war guns left are basically vaults and military depots that are guarded by giant stompy robots.

I miss when Ghouls weren't just burn victims without noses.
In fairness to the producers, to do ghouls properly they'd basically need to be CGIing the actors faces for every shot. The only VFX I can think of on that level was Dent in the Dark Knight and that was a full budget feature film and for a single character for less than half the runtime...

So I can't blame them for going in a simpler direction...

I mean movies made in the 70's could've attempted doing the impossible, but they chose to just not do the impossible.
Between 'do something in a crappy way' and 'don't do it at all', I prefer the second. X_X
