Colonys act as time capsels for the civilizations that spawn them, keeping lingo vernacular, and customs that have long since fallen out of favor back home. That is what is meant.

The original English (Old English, IIRC?) language mutated into American-English over time, just as Old English became British-English.

It's literally like a strain of bacteria splitting in two, with the second one mutating into something else along parallel lines and the original continuing to mutate. That's not a time capsule.

Hell, the same can be said for every other flavour of English out there, such as Australian-English.
