I suppose "familiarized" would be the better word thinking about it again, but the point is that a lot of the "uncanniness" wiring is based on what you've seen previously, so any discernable "foreign" detail is liable to end up feeling "weird".
Seriously, take a glance at Traditional Chinese Artwork, the squinty eyes and round face are just Undoctored Asian.
