Make of that what you will! o_O

My God, that lizard has a giant scrotum!

Wait, who burned Sweden capital in 1187? and,do they even had capital then? early states usually had no one capital, but few towns in which King resided in year.

The map appears to be from a Latvian perspective. I think they're referring to the burning of Sigtuna by raiders. But this was not the capital of Sweden, and the raiders were pillaging Karelians, not Latvians.

It's a very weird map.

Indeed,Latvia is Center of universe here.Do not even look at them.
But it is OK,if you have map from USA perspective, then why Latvia should be worst?

Well, a map from the average American's perspective probably wouldn't show Latvia at all - most Americans pay little to no attention to the rest of the world, and even then only notice the countries that are either active threats (on some level), have heavily advertised tourist spots, or their cuisine is already widespread in the USA.

So,Europe would be made From France,Italy and Germany for them?

Europe as commonly thought of in the US is "western Europe", IE The UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain, plus Russia. Give our education system some credit, we generally know the major colonial powers that settled north America plus Germany and Italy, and of course Russia has been a longstanding opponent of the US so folks know it.

Now, between Germany and Russia... might as well be a blank map area. In fairness to many Americans, up until the late 1980s the way the Soviet Union ran the Warsaw Pact there really wasn't much distinction from East Germany to Russia... it was all "Soviet Bloc" to the US.

pretty much - throw in Ireland for beer and rainbows, maybe Greece for athens or Spain for barcelona. Russia would be there as a former and current threat.

But...

A: everything between germany/adriatic and the russian border would be some hodgepodge of "models, gangsters, and battlefields" or somesuch.

B. the above presumes that they correctly identify the locations of Germany and Russia. I would not wager large sums on that assertion being true.

Foreigners really tend to forget - most Americans have no particular interest in the rest of the world, nor much inclination to invest the time and energy to learn about it.

Reminds me of the story of Americans back in the 1980's or earlier who were protesting against the Apartheid policies of South Africa - but who could not find where South Africa is on the map!
One would think the name of the country would give them a clue...

A random American might not be able to locate the US on a world map ...

Geography is not our strong suit.

I find that one hard to believe as maps are on display in ALL kinds of media that get viewed by average Joe.
You should believe it.

From the article: "About 11 percent of young citizens of the U.S. couldn't even locate the U.S. on a map."
