The heroine in S1 was insufferable. At least she's absent in S2 but then they replaced her with a new girl who also isn't very likeable either.
Oh yeah, Lena is terrible, but they make her even worse by cutting out all the material that would actually establish that she's a friendless loser who's in a parasocial relationship with people she's never met. That turns her from "annoying clueless slacktivist who doesn't get reality" to "tragically naive girl trying to save her friends," which would make her a lot more tolerable.
Frederica is much less annoying to me due everyone in universe giving her shit.
That said, if you just watch to the end of season 2, episode 10, the show comes to an emotionally satisfying conclusion as
everyone dies in a literal suicide mission.
I thought the first half of S1 was decent. Felt like you were down in the trenches with characters dying left and right to artillery bombardments.
Honestly, I never really felt any real emotions towards the 86 until
Fido's flashback, because of how the writers and director did things.
They came across as very "mid", especially in comparison to Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans, which dealt with a lot of the same themes, but with
way better writing.
