Australian expeditioner evacuated from Antarctica in five-day mission

Australia, China and the US work together to medically evacuate the expeditioner.

An Australian was struck with a serious illness while stationed at Davis Research Station in Antarctica. In a five day rescue operation, a passing Chinese icebreaker was able to use its on board helicopters to deploy a team of Australians to construct a ski way at Davis Research Station, thus facilitating the arrival of an American rescue plane dispatched to Davis Research Station from McMurdo Base over two thousand kilometers away. The American Basler aircraft first stopped at an Australian aerodrome to pick up an Australian Doctor, then picked up the patient at Davis Research station using the freshly built ski way.

It then returned to the Australian Wilkins Aerodrome where an Australian Airbus A319 was able to fly the patient to Hobart on Christmas Eve.

A British woman, Jasmine Harrison, became the youngest woman to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean, completing the 3,000 mile journey at the age of 21 in just over a mere seventy days. The previous age record was held by American Katie Spotz who performed the similar feat (in reverse direction) at the age of 22 in 2010.
