Movies How much damage did Sonic cause in the trailer, and what would be the actual response of the world?

Urabrask Revealed

Let them go.

Okay, a while ago Paramont published a new trailer for Sonic, with a new and improved Sonic. One scene in the trailer stuck out for me however:

What the scene shows isn't just the lights going out on the west coast. It's the lights going out on the West coast and middle of the USA, portions of Canada, Mexico, at least the upper part of South America, and who knows what else. This is like setting off several EMPs across two continents.

Just how much damage did Sonic cause there, and how large would the death toll realistically be? What would the USA's military react like? What would the world's nations' responses be?

We won't know until we see the movie, but it's probably not as bad as you would think. It's going to set a record for the largest blackout in history* and the number of people who will be affected will be much greater. In the long run, though, I doubt the death toll will be much greater than 500 people. And those people are going to die stupidly, from stupid shit like traffic accidents and accidental fires and carbon monoxide poisoning from leaving generators running indoors.

Also, when the movie takes place will determine how people die. If it's during the winter, people will die from hypothermia and carbon monoxide poisoning from heaters and generators. If it's during the summer, people will die from heatstroke and carbon monoxide poisoning from the generators powering their AC units.

I guess the moral of the story is, people should plan for emergencies and learn how to operate emergency generators without gassing themselves.

*Let's hope the Great Attractor doesn't take that as a challenge.

It's not just the west coast of the USA that went dark, it's middle and parts of south america too.

Are you really sure the death tow would be this low? It seems difficult to believe.

Eh, I just assumed that the number of people affected would be about five times as great as the 2003 blackout.
Many places with vulnerable people, like hospitals and nursing homes, have backup generators. Per the National Electric Code, these generators are required to supply power for one and a half hours before dropping below 87% power, and I imagine many of them can run for much longer.

Also, how are we connected to the power grid in South America?

The USA is likely not connected to it, but that doesn't change that multiple cities and towns are suddenly without juice.
Considering how corrupt the various nations are down there, I suspect that chances of anything getting fixed outside the most important places are close to zero. Most places will stay in the dark.

EDIT: Some dictators like Chavez might even see it as a blessing.

It depends what the effect actually is.

If it just causes a brief power outage because of weird sonic powers and the power comes right back on after a minute then not many casualties. Maybe 100 due to surprise/human error/losing power at a critical time.

If it's like a emp then thousands if not tens of thousands. Cause then you have planes crashing everywhere, cars losing power and crashing, fires going out of control, riots and mobs, plus whatever else.

I doubt they will make it like a emp because it would really mess up the tone of the movie.

Well I mean I don't expect any in the movie itself. But I also expect them to say it was a emp and logically a shit ton of deaths should of happened.
