Coffee we often being our own.
Caffeine is important.
Food can be good if they know we are going on a suicide mission.
Or it's a holiday

My DFAC in South Korea was awesome. They did good things for us.

As for institutuion food...I only had that experience when my Guard unit was training at Ft. Stewart. That was so bad, when the base CO visited our unit, our meals changed the next morning.

That's Herculean results in the Army.
Food is important.
And South Korea best DFACs

The only time I had bad food in the Army was in the field. And usually when it was the non-MRE food packs. Those were godawful.

Actual food though? At a base it was bland catering food but hot for quality. I had fucking lobstertails at a DFAC once in Iraq, not on a holiday. Good lobster. Back at Aberdeen, it wasn't spectacular food, food cooked for masses of people rarely is, but it was never bad. Boring is the worst descriptor I can apply, and you'll have access to condiments almost anywhere.

Are there some awful MREs? Yes, the omelet is/was disgusting when I was in. There were also MREs we (They, really, I just avoided the bad MREs more than looked for good ones) fought over because they were good. Some of the Vegetarian options were pretty tasty.

But DFAC food is almost always 'okay' or better.

Unless you're Air Force. If you aren't eating five star meals every meal, you're entitled to hazard pay. If your barracks doesn't have A/C and WiFi, Hazard pay. Motherfucking Air Force lives nice.

The submariners also have damm good food given the somewhat limited facilities available on board

I've heard it said that submariners get the best food in the entire navy as a way to help keep morale up. Warships aren't exactly known for their spacious accomodations, submarines dial cramped way past 11, and there might be more crew than beds.
on USN subs there are indeed more crew than beds albeit the ratio of beds to sailors is much much higher than it used to be on older designs. And yeah they get the best chefs for anyone who isn't a flag officer and unlike everyone else in the navy they can get fried food while afloat

Fried food? In a submarine? The USN is sparing no expense because a commercial deep fryer is a grease fire looking for an excuse.

subs are quite literally the ships in the USN who still have them due to the whole we care about sailors health thing
I'm not disagreeing with that at all. I've designed kitchen exhaust systems and have a pretty good idea of what it takes to prevent a deep fryer from saying "evacuate the building because I'm burning it down and the fire department is on its way".

at least most of the time unlike surface ships subs aren't pitching and heaving around.
