The trailer just dropped. So they're remaking The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, now renamed just Bel-Air, with Will Smith on board as a producer so you know it's going to be good...

Wait why'd they make it all grim and gritty? Will's shooting off guns in the trailer? Will was in prison? It's suddenly all about drama? Where's the comedic take that made the original good?

Okay, I can see how it could still be good but this massive change to the original premise doesn't fill me with an overwhelming sense of optimism. Does anybody have any more news on it?

It's on one of the innumerable different streaming services, so I can say easily I won't be watching it.
Will Smith being involved at the beginning of the trailer gave me some cautious hope even as something I wouldn't watch it'd be good.

I'll give it cautious, perhaps undeserved credit and say it could, conceivably, be good. But it's definitely only using Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as a nostalgia-draw to try and get people interested, because the premise and relationships seem to have been changed pretty thoroughly--or, at very least, all the negative and critical bits of them have been amped-up and/or used as trailer-bait while any actual display of caring and love between nephew-Smith and his auntie & uncle & cousin in Bel-Air that the original series had were left out.

Huh, their literally trying to return to Bel Air, as one Academic Agent always said. Basically saying they want to return to the 90s.

However, looking at this trailer, I'm not sure they're capable of returning to Bel Air at this point.

So a couple years ago a fan trailer dropped on a reboot of Fresh Prince. Will Smith loved it talked to the creator and signed him up to help make the reboot. Heard nothing for a while, guess it is going through.
