I think that has more to due with the media's general portrayal of Yakuza. People picture Lung as a Yakuza boss due to being Japanese even if he runs his gang more like the Crips from little we see.

But for better or worse Yakuza are seen as "Gentlemen" criminals in most media like the Mafia. This means that they are viewed better then random street gangs(Merchants), or neo nazis(Empire 88). You also see the same thing happen to Marquis because he is seen as the old school Mafia. In general this means that media portrays them as having rules and tends to whitewash the really bad stuff.

“Gentleman” criminal

God I gotta spit on that concept, I remember having a conversation with some guy on Reddit regarding “Gentleman” Johnny Marcone who was admitted to be into some REALLY horrible shit, guy provides “order” but many of the activities under him are still fucking horrible and NOT so clean or made to have much standards beyond “don’t hurt kids” as I’m pretty sure anyone above the age of 18 is liable to have his home wrecked, his business burned down, be forcibly addicted to drugs and prostitution and so on

Though, TBF Marcone doesn’t have that much power or ability to look over and manage everybody

He talked about records of the ACTUAL Yakuza, about some incident in the 80s involving a kid who joined it and started terrorizing his family and some girl he raped with other new members

The Redditor talked about one problem even for those “gentlemen” type criminals....when they get really fucking bad or have really horrible members, they will “protect” them specifically and never turn em in

Guy’s no Yakuza, he’s not even related to any Yakuza families or has any of those traditions in Worm if I can recall anything

The ABB is NOT some “family” either. I don’t even recall Lung wearing a suit OR a shirt

This is pretty much a general problem I have with fan fiction: you have these great settings, with often great characters, and then you end up doing nothing with them!

I'm in the process of replaying the second nuTomb Raider game and made the mistake of going for a search on Fanfiction.net for content. Round about 1.600 fics, and not one that's over 20.000 words that even tries to make a new adventure. I mean, how? Why? You have literally every myth and lost civilization ever at your disposal to concoct something, and you do nothing with that! FFS, I could come up with some basic intriguing plots that fit the universe in ten minutes or less! But what do we get? Self-inserts and slash fics. Urgh!

Pretty much every fic I’ve seen involves the Dragonborn as the MC and it barely makes use of any new threats or using different Daedric Princes or mentions of another Elder Scrolls prophecy

Pet Peeve of the Day: Inspired by Mass and Magic: adult Harry Potter wizards that are supposed to be skilled/competent speaking incantations to use their magic. Silent Casting is 6th year material and virtually the only time in the entire series that we see any adult wizard using an incantation it is for 1) dramatic effect or 2) for demonstration purposes as they teach. And yet so very many fics seem to totally forget that this is the case.
Snape having to concentrate hard and mouth a long drawn out incantation in book one ringing any bells? Dumbledore having to call out a spell by name to stop harry from falling?

Does quiddich make wizards weaker?

One Piece fics where they can’t get the naming rule of “Last Name First, First Name Last”

Even dumber when there’s an actual japanese name being used like “Naruto Namikaze”

Seriously, even in Naruto it’d be Uzumaki Naruto, unless they’ve only watched the dubs....likely only ever watched the dubs

Dubs are inherently supierior, and I couldn't give a shit for the politeness standards of an inferior language.

Japanese especially, they arrogantly refuse to say names and english words correctly when they are absolutely able to, and no, adding two or three syllables to a name is not an accent.

I think he'd have at the latter "kindest" sort had been made a servant or a whipping boy for the legitimate children

Honestly, I feel much of the Isekai genre is the result of whatever FFN equivalent Japan has, deciding to try and make original fiction themselves whilst indulging in their chuunibyou fantasies
But they create their own settings instead of ruining established settings. Their settings may be bland but its their own and thus imo superior to mainstream media like Disney Star wars cause there, an established setting was ruined.

Plus those authors in time can become better, plus they write wish fulfillment and there is nothing wrong with that.

Yeah, even the lady who made Tate No Yuusha made characters like the evil douchebag King more three-dimensional and useful apparently, so they have more impetus or feeling to grow of a sort

Creating bad writing is creating bad writing. No amount of bad hobbit movies make the Lord of the Rings bad.

Theres nothing wrong with shitting either, but shit goes in the toilet, just like masturbatory isekai goes in the trash.

I hate it when stories keep to closely to the stations of canon. If the author is just going to write the same plot as the original source, then why not just read the original source? They're just wasting my time and theirs.

Especially video game-based fanfics. If you're basically just recounting what happens, you're just giving me a Let's Play.

Some authors, who have a really good grasp of the craft, can actually do good work in this regard. I've seen some game plots be converted into very well written "novels" (not the published variety, I mean the fics that are practically novels).

I’ve seen some LITRPG stuff

Honestly, all the game stats and screens full of skills and whatever, alongside the writing style kinda kills remembering it’s a story when the MC looks to micromanage stuff and feels flat

You missed The Dreaming, by Asynca, which looks at Aboriginal myths. It's a sequel, though, so you might have to read that first (I forget how important that is). And the first one (The Camera Loves You) is a reimagining of the original Tomb Raider plot (which is the same as Anniversary), so that isn't as new. Both are very good though, and worth a read. Here's a link to the series page:

It's also on fanfiction.net, with the authors page being here:

This is a pretty petty one but: Jump Chains.

The same dang thing happens every time. It's a cool story, I'm enjoying the writing and characterization, and then bam! It jumps into some universe I've never heard of/at least never read and I'm lost trying to figure out what's going on and drop the story.

Crossovers are fine because I know what I'm getting into in page 1 and if it's a fandom I despise/don't know I can just pass, but a Jump Chain will rarely let me know ahead of time that it's headed somewhere I can't follow.

As an addendum Jump Chains tend to have power scaling issues because the characters tend to pick up tech/powers at each stop and like loopers, soon become unstoppable, and the writer rarely has the sense to escalate the world chosen (ie. going to high-power-level and more dangerous worlds) to match.

Not everything has to be Lord of the Rings.
Not every runner can be Usain Bolt but everyone who runs as a profession should work hard to get as fast as they can.

The only way to get better writing is to write. So naturally the starting point is most likely going to be shit.
Practice doesnt make perfect, practice makes how you practice.
The only way to get better writing is to read huge amounts of literature and study the structure of writing. You can absolutely be bad at something you do every day for forty years.
