Russia-Ukraine War Politics Thread Mk. 2

Pantsir is Pants when it comes to sea based air defense.

Then again it was in a repair shipyard so maybe it was turned off.

Which speaks towards the lack of effective land based air defense in the Kerch Peninsula of all places. Though I did hear they intercepted at least one of the missiles, but I didn't really look into it.
Rumors are that they may have. At least that they intercepted something. Which may or may not have been MALD decoys. Ukrainians apparently did a combined attacks with cruise missiles, anti-radar missiles and decoys at the same time.

Yeah it does look like it was three for three. If they didn't hit the ship, they still weren't intercepted and landed closeby I guess.

OR WAS IT?

Yes... Yes it was.

I legitimately don't understand the logic for Ukraine to target Russian navy assets. The entire Russian navy could sink tomorrow and it would barely effect the ongoing war. Why fire expensive, foreign imported cruse missiles at targets like that?

To force russia to redistribute its defenses away from the front lines
Either they allow their backlines to bleed, or they spend resources on defending them. Either way, they gotta pay, and it is quite costly.
This kind of harassment harms their overall logistical capacity.

Four words.
Kalibr launchers, supply ships.
The last one was an example of the former.

Because the Russian ships and submarines are some of the main launch platforms for land attack missiles(Kalibr cruise missiles, as said above), so there is a military reason for that.

As others have said, ships are mobile launch points for missiles the Russians have used against the Ukrainians.

Further, Ukraine has coastal cities that Russia very clearly wants to take, having already taken something like half of its coastline.

Also as others have said, forcing Russia to protect assets further behind the lines prevents them from being able to concentrate their air defenses on the front line.

Finally, Russia keeps screwing around with Ukraine's grain exports. The more Russian ships are sunk, the more difficult it is for them to do that, and the lower the perceived cost for other nations intervening to protect civilian ships going to and from Ukrainian ports.

Ukraine has a media strategy, not a military strategy

At least try to have a coherent point if you're going to post on stuff like this? Damaging the Russian Navy serves Ukraine's war goals on several levels, as outlined above.

As others mentioned, those ships are missile launching platforms, same with the Kilo subs.

> USA president has dementia
> Russia president has dementia

... clown world.
next we will get a dementia patient as presidents of india, CCP, and ECU (European Communist Union)
with every country being secretly ruled from the shadow by its intelligence services
Nah man, the difference is that Putin is riding a tiger and the moment he actually gets dementia he'll be fucking killed. The man has survived at least six assassination attempts that we know of. The benefit of an unstable government is that usually your heads of state don't live long enough to get dementia, they either stay sharp or they fucking die.

Anyone else notice how short crewed the Russian tanks have been this year? Every time a tank is mission killed in the last year only two people jump out. Even when the only damage is a blown track. That reduces the combat performance by half when the driver has to also jump into the gunner's seat. Russians don't do cross-training you're either a driver, gunner or tank commander.

My guy, generally that's because the driver is dead. Nothing to do with short crews, everything to do with how tanks are built. Drivers, in pretty much all tanks, are closer to the ground and the front of the tank and usually surrounded by fuel or ammo.

For all the memes, an easy way to visualize it is by going into simulator games like Warthunder and looking at the x-rays.

If a hit penetrates and sets off the fuel and/or ammo, the driver isn't going to be the only dead member of the crew.

Black Seas Fleet ships also enhances air defense in the region.

Or ya know... They did in theory.

Sure, but I was referring to why only two people are bailing out of a three man tank. Odds are someone died, not short crew.
It's not only penetrations in which 2 men bail out. Mechanical failures or track damage in which the interior was not penetrated have also had only 2 men evacuate.
