I personally think the only moral factions are the nationalists or the separatists.
The more you look into the background of the spanish civil war the more you find out that the spanish republicans were not the shinning vison of morality and quite frankly could have avoided it all by not acting like total bastards.

Yup the Nationalists weren't perfect but better than the alternative.
Still do feel a little bad for the Basque's though. I mean their goal of independence and their own state isn't inherently wrong.

The Nationalists were certainly the least bad option in the Spanish uncivil war, while the opposing alliance of marxists/trotskists/anarchists/stalinists got the international sympathies they certainly were not the good guys.

Who could recognize when things went wrong, and that repeating the exact same mistakes was a bad plan.
Foreign Volunteers are always pretty neat to me, especially in the modern times. So even the Marxist-Leninist International Brigades of the Spanish Civil War and the more contemporary International Fighters that fought alongside the Marxist-Leninist Kurdish YPG and later Syrian Defense Forces. Plus the foreign mercenaries and volunteers that showed up in places like Rhodesia and other parts of Africa and at present in Ukraine. Even reading the stories of random Westerners who showed up to support the Libyan Rebels during the Libyan Civil War or the one US military veteran who ended up fighting alongside Al Nusra of all groups early in the Syrian Civil War.
Of course I find more sympathy with those who joined for ideological or idealist reasons as opposed to mercenaries, but there's some overlap. Plus while the concept is romantic and thus garners sympathy, a lot of the time it's just broken or lost people. Which can be endearing (and dangerous) in itself.
