Oh, lovely. They've sent me a mo-ron.

This Tiny Nuclear Reactor Will Change Energy—and Now It's Officially Safe
A massive step for a mini reactor.
How soon before we get nuclear powered cars?

NuScale's SMRs are pretty neat, but talking about putting reactors in cars is just dumb.
These things are the size of a extra-long semi-trailor, not exactly tiny.
The biggest issue with these reactors right now is the cores have to be swapped out every other year. That's a not inconsiderable amount of maintainance and up-keep, compared to most reactors.
If they could get those cores up to a life of 5 years, then these things would really take off.
I am well aware of the potential of these reactors, I did a research paper about them in my old college program. These reactors would be great for rual area's.

The swapping out of cores every other year is the biggest issue, because you will run through fuel, and spent fuel storage space, a lot faster than most reactors.
These things have promise, make no mistake.
Hah! You'd hate to see what weird research proposals have been attempted before.NuScale's SMRs are pretty neat, but talking about putting reactors in cars is just dumb.
No, I know about the early attempts to put them in cars during the 50's/60's.Hah! You'd hate to see what weird research proposals have been attempted before.
Then you'll know if someone wants to repeat stupidity they'll do it again or as a scam. No, I know about the early attempts to put them in cars during the 50's/60's.
I'm well versed in engineering fuck-ups from watching so many engineering disaster docs as a kid. History covered this like 15 years ago.
Couldn't that be alleviated by lifting Carter-era restrictions on reprocessing nuclear waste? The swapping out of cores every other year is the biggest issue, because you will run through fuel, and spent fuel storage space, a lot faster than most reactors.
All the official greenies and their lobbies.Which countries are likely to ban this or keep it on near-indefinite-hold?
I don’t think the stigma around the word “nuclear” will be gone for awhile
All the official greenies and their lobbies.
Gotta keep a monopoly going.Ironically including oil and gasoline dudes
Gotta keep a monopoly going.
Fallout in real life lol
Well there is those fission batteries in the games.....They'd have to be fusion reactors to be Fallout!
Probably.Couldn't that be alleviated by lifting Carter-era restrictions on reprocessing nuclear waste?
Probably.
The ban on reprocessing spent fuel is part of what makes nuclear power so hard to make viable in the US.
