Tiny Nuclear Reactors Beginning to be a Reality

NuScale's SMRs are pretty neat, but talking about putting reactors in cars is just dumb.

These things are the size of a extra-long semi-trailor, not exactly tiny.

The biggest issue with these reactors right now is the cores have to be swapped out every other year. That's a not inconsiderable amount of maintainance and up-keep, compared to most reactors.

If they could get those cores up to a life of 5 years, then these things would really take off.

These reactors would be great for rural area's.

I am well aware of the potential of these reactors, I did a research paper about them in my old college program.

The swapping out of cores every other year is the biggest issue, because you will run through fuel, and spent fuel storage space, a lot faster than most reactors.

These things have promise, make no mistake.

Yeah i hope those issues can be sorted out in the future.

Hah! You'd hate to see what weird research proposals have been attempted before.
No, I know about the early attempts to put them in cars during the 50's/60's.

I'm well versed in engineering fuck-ups from watching so many engineering disaster docs as a kid. History covered this like 15 years ago.

Oh, lovely. They've sent me a mo-ron.

Then you'll know if someone wants to repeat stupidity they'll do it again or as a scam.

Which countries are likely to ban this or keep it on near-indefinite-hold?

I don’t think the stigma around the word “nuclear” will be gone for awhile

Gotta keep a monopoly going.

Here's my theory, eventually the majority of the world will have lots of taxes and "regulations" when it comes to making use of energy because of the "carbon footprint"

While oil/fossil fuel/gasoline/petroleum/coal will be vilified, they'll STILL be going strong

Because while the poor can barely afford or even be legally allowed to use that much power

The rich will have more and more leeway when it comes to being allowed to do pollution, so it’d in a way be a “luxury good” that’s also simultaneously a necessity and the corporations in-charge of these “hates” products will STAY rich
