As a thought experiment, if it wasn't fraud then what was it that cost Trump 2020? I could put it down, in part, to a strong anti-Trump sentiment that has been drummed up by the media. His manner is too brusque for some and he can even come off as sleazy. He does have a somewhat shady history in business (not as much as some Dems, mind you), but that's about as much as I can think of. Also, Covid absolutely blindsided everyone and that might have hurt him in ways some Republicans don't see.
It was a combination of him being ineffective at demonstrating what success he had in dealing with COVID and appearing to not take it seriously (which only worsened when he contracted it). His constant refrain of “We’re turning the corner, turning the corner” when that turned out to not be the case also put people off: Voters prefer it if someone levels with them as opposed to just blowing smoke (which is partly why he did so well against Clinton). And his doing juvenile stunts like picking fights with members of his own administration who tried to level with people didn’t help, nor did wasting time just picking fights with the press.
Even with all that in mind, I'm surprised Biden still won. His in-party support was lower than Hillary Clinton's, yet he got more votes than Obama. If it was Anti-Trump sentiment that carried the day, holy shit it is more potent than anyone realised...
Actually it was more “the population of the United States grew by 22 million over the past eight years” than anything else. Trump also set a record for GOP votes.
As for anti-Trump sentiment, yeah it is pretty potent. He’s the inverse of Obama in that sense: A lot of the policies he enacted were and are much more popular with the American public than he is. Also that more than half of the GOP base actually can’t stand him but there’s no alternative.
Basically, had he made the campaign about issues (like how the economy roared back to life and over what to do during and post-COVID without the bullshit*), he had a very good chance to win. But he played right into Biden’s hands by making the election about him personally.
*-In other words, play it straight and provide specific details of what steps the feds have taken to help the states along. He actually did oversee a good effort, but Trump is the type to just sit back and go “do this” and leave the details to others. It’s part of why policy wise he was successful, but it also means that he ignores those details and brushes them off as irrelevant, then when people give the details and he hears something he doesn’t like, he goes off the deep end. As we have all seen for the past two months with his massive Twitter rage fest. It’s things like that that make people balk at voting for him.
