I mean, if you votes are going to go based on other states' votes and not your own citizens... the candidates have precious little reason to pay attention to you, listen to you, or send any bribes federal money to your state do they? That's actually one of the core reasons why I don't think they'll survive Constitutional muster. It decouples the State vote from the State electors, and functionally gives the electors to people outside the state, thus disenfranchising the citizens of the state.

Oh, there's also the fact that this is a blatant attempt at doing an end run around the Constitutional Amendment process. It's such a major structural change to things that it really SHOULD be handled through a Constitutional Amendment, but those pushing for this know it wouldn't pass the Amendment processes.

I admittedly skimmed it, but there’s a few chapters in which the UN sends a number of failing starships full of starving refugees made of political dissidents, criminals and poor people and says that the titular Freehold “agreed” to accept them

Thing is, while they actually ARE a country made of various immigrants and their descendents, they don’t have much government(they DO have a military)because it’s pretty hands off and have new kmmigrants every now and then

As the saying goes, True Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner.

That's why no Democracy ever goes with just straight up popular votes without a massive array of laws that decouple it from the actual popular vote. Removing those laws that protect your state when other states haven't seems very... sheeplike.
