Warhammer Warhammer General discussion thread: Now with 100% more Space Marines

Might be a strange question to ask, but am I alone in despising what Games Workshop has done to Ollanius Pius? I know the Horus Heresy series made him important, made him a perpetual no less that had fought in battles across thousands of years, but…I feel like that somewhat defeats the point of him.

To me there is something deeply profound about a mere mortal man, a common soldier scared out of his wits, putting himself between his Emperor and a Mad God in the form of Horus Lupercal. He had no chance, no hope, only his duty. And on that day, against the Arch Traitor himself, the Imperial Guard held the fucking line.
Agreed. But then again, Games Workshop is out to completely destroy the 40k, so...

Gee what could be going on?

The CFO of Games Workshop, resigned and is apparently selling her shares.

To little to late.

Starve em' and don't give GW a cent. They decided to bite the hand that fed them, they made enemies of their core customer demographic.

They played a stupid game, and are now getting their stupid prize.

Gotta' admit, I'm impressed they made 40K still look somewhat "serious", despite the '50s being too tame and campy to really capture the whole "grimdark" ethos in all its glory. After all, things could only get so brutal or graphic with the standards and special effects that existed back then.

Perpetuals are a terrible piece of 40k lore and ignored by basically every single writer in just about every single book that isn't done by their own creator, showing how little even other GW/Black Library writers think of them.

in general i have found it wise to freeze my headcanon at 2006, before the first of the horus heresy novels began to consume the setting

There have been some good Horus Heresy novels but…sometimes one wonders if it would have been better off left as foggy ancient history. I rather liked the idea of it being more akin to a Greek Tragedy, especially in the case of the Emperor.

yup. And because the novels were so profitable they are trying to turn the main setting into horus heresy II, complete with primarchs.

The heresy and the primarchs should have stayed in the past.

Given that Chaos has already had a few Primarchs for a long while, I don’t mind the idea of loyalist Primarchs popping up, but it shouldn’t be too many (and perhaps not Bobby G straight away. Vulkan would have made a touch more sense at the time). And of course, even they wouldn’t have the full picture of what happened during the Heresy.

That was actually what I liked the most about Heresy... sense of history and archaeology. So yeah, definitely a better option.

Warhammer 40k does have that wonderful sense of “ancient” to it, and GW made the exact same mistake BioWare made with the Reapers regarding it. Some things really are better off left as mysteries, although a concrete fact hither and thither serves nicely to generate discussion and theory crafting.

You know, like actual archeology.

Further to the original point, I have a sneaking suspicion there were some Primarchs more likely to return than Bobby G back in the day. Certainly wouldn’t have minded, during the Fall of Cadia, for the Great Wolf to careen into Abaddon’s flank and allow some Imperial forces to withdraw in semi-good order.
