Very nice chapter, and interesting take on what to focus on in the reprimand. That's certainly a valid issue but not what I would have focused on if I was the Lt.
Everyone screws up on occasion no matter how careful you are and while he certainly should have been more careful I would have addressed his reaction to the screw-up as a bigger issue. Although screwing up diplomatic relations (which is one possible result of a mechwarrior responding to his own screwup by yelling at the people they were supposed to work with) doesn't provide as obvious imagry as what the Lt. chose to focus on, but the damage can be even greater.

Thanks for the update. Can’t wait for this unit to see action. Although this might be Chapter 32.

Well now that this is updating again we're back having one whole story on this sight worth reading. If we could bribe/blackmail you into continuing your Fate/Worm quest we'd have a quest worth reading again as well.

You it occurs to me we haven't gotten a POV from the dracs for awhile and holy crap would they be interested in Weber and company. As in even Takeshi might be interested since it's not every the sword of light loses a entire battalion and gets driven from a planet in defeat plus the loss of a another heavy weight battalion as well on top.

just thinking about this story some more and i honestly cant wait for the first raid because while i dont want to see stuff get destroyed seeing some drac sword of light land and not be ready for the heavy gravity and mech munching fauna will be hilarious. Honestly besides some ground to space defenses most of the fortifications id do in space since thats funnily enough the least defended area of the system, honestly just pumping out hundreds of reinforced(for the micro meteors and radiation) shipping containers with a couple dozen LRM racks with an cheap booster and RCS system and targeting array to scatter around the jump points and stations would be smart and easily doable. After all given that most dropships dont even have a naval rated PD network a couple hundred even Standard LRMs coming down their throat would be bullet hell and soften up or outright destroy most raids.

I fully expect a raid to try to land away from the, honestly, small outpost on the planet to set up a base. Then just never hear from them again.

The jumpship that brought them eventually having to ask the Duke where the raiders went, and the Duke saying he doesn’t know and isn’t willing to spare the forces to look, which is really not what you expect from a planetary ruler.

Come to think of, with the AI voice fakes being advanced as they are, it would be possible to make a mocumentary about Catachan flora and fauna with convincing enough David Attenborough narration.

“And here we have a Draconis Grasshopper. It is an invasive species to Catachan and ill-equipped for survival. It has been found by a Mantis Colossus and has been pinned to the ground. The Mantis, having found the weakest point in its prey, is in the process of having the Grasshopper’s head removed from its body.

The Grasshopper’s meager defenses proven insufficient for the Mantis’ claws and armor.
Once the Mantis has had its fill, it will leave the remnants for the scavengers. The Ferrovore Bettles which inhabit the nearby jungle will no doubt drag what’s left, to feed their young.”

The greatest insult possible, while the sword of light is trying to set up a FOB or even just defend their landing site the duke does nothing about it and instead sends out prospectors and industrial and labor mechs to start setting up maiming outposts near the right because the drags drew every animal to them so losses for setting up mining operations will be much lower.

Also I imagine that the first from birth Catachan ASF and regular aerospace pilots will be some of the best of the best in the entire commonwealth given the fact that from birth they will have been putting up with higher than average Gs and their entire training period will acclimatize them even more. I honestly feel a little bad for the First in atmo dog fight lol

They will also be amazing at avoiding flak.

What? You thought the Catachan Biosphere didn’t have anti-air capabilities? There is another reason the SLDF had to deploy the bio weapons from orbit.

And that is not even getting into the flight capable animals. and plants. Yeah the whirler seeds on this planet can probably sear through poorly armored ASF wings like an AC2 round.
