Where do we go from here?

After what amounted to devastation in the entertainment world in 2023 where do you think things will go from here?

I do not see the woke stupidity ever changing in the mainstream. It has taken on a life of its own, it is too entrenched, and it has made too many enemies to ever recover. Therefore the very thing which has brought it to ruin will not change until total collapse occurs.

It is interesting to note that movies aimed at young people have done so poorly. They have been inundated non-stop for decades with leftist propaganda, yet they have rejected the movies and television (and comics and...) infected with it.

I DO see this as the best possible time for independent efforts to move in.

My advice? If the fanboys (And fangirls) are so disgusted with whatever Hollywood and media, etc. are putting out? They of course have good reason for this, and if they, including you, are actually serious about putting out good content that actually tells a STORY?

Create your own content, seriously. Yes, do it.

People forget where guys like George Lucas started out. He just started out with a script he wrote up influenced by Flash Gordon, James Campbells "The Hero's Journey", aerial dogfights during WW2, etc. And his "special effects team" was a bunch of guys with glue, sticks, plastic battleship kits, etc.

So...write your own stories. Write your own scripts. Really, for right now, forget Hollywood, okay? Write your own stories. Learn the art of storytelling and writing good characters. Don't shove politics into it. Any story or character where they start shoving in ideological points is going to look like a big stinking pile of bovine feces, we've seen that with leftist points, it's equally true with rightist points. Ask why so many "Christian" films, at least until recently, look and sound and act terrible? Even Dinesh D'Souza pointed this out.

Write them, publish them. Use independent publishers if you need to, including digital publishers. Yes, they exist. Go to independent studios if you must. Yes, they exist too. Or hell...just put them on the internet if nothing else, like me. :p

My point is? If you're not happy with the storytelling that's out there...and yes, there's good reason because a lot of it DOES suck and the art of storytelling is getting replaced in some regards with a lot of cringe-inducing political crap ala Soviet-Union style? Don't just go the lazy route of some (I stress SOME, not ALL) of the fanboys on the net who would rather waste time putting out video after video bashing this or that and making money off of youtube. No one's stopping you from putting out decent content in some form if you can tell a good story.

Okay, stepping off my rickety soapbox now.

I have done this- extensively. The "Yvonne" story in the creative writing section of this website, and much more. I just haven't linked or copied most of it here so far. I even have a sort of online comic.

I'm even working on a DOS all-text project, maybe for sale on Steam and GOG. Hey, if "Depression Quest" can make it...

Link me to some of your efforts.

But the topic here is where do you think things will go from here. What do you think?

Well, link that stuff here then. Maybe we can get some more views and a conversation going.

My main effort, which admittedly got derailed in the past 1-2 years due to real life and real world events, but which I'm getting back to is an alternate history storyline of the Third World War, aka the Cold War goes hot.

There was also a Stranger Things multiverse fic that actually was getting spun off of that, but I'm not happy with what I actually wrote on that thus far and am now planning on rewriting that.

Anyway, I just wrote what I said above, more to get that off my chest than anything. There are good stories out there, just not enough coverage or exposure.

As for where things go from here? My opinion? Buckle up for now for even MORE cringe-inducing crap from Hollywood. Maybe the lessons of the past year are starting to sink in for some, but for others like Disney, clearly not yet. I know people love to speculate but I don't think anyone really knows what the hell is going on over there. Less people are going to theaters, streaming services other than Amazons are continuing to tank. You can only keep shelling out so much money for dismal returns, political indoctrination or not, even though 2024 is an election year (shudder). So yes, I would start paying more attention to independent publishers and independent studio efforts.

For now, start looking at novels from smaller and independent publications and studios. Sorry to say, don't expect anything new or groundbreaking from Hollywood or the major studios for a while. They've dug themselves into a hole, they'll probably keep digging a little more until they realize what's happening and then have to start digging out again.

Yeah, I know, I don't really consider myself a "nerd" and I can see the state of pop culture with the constant infighting is abysmal. It's just gonna be like that for a while. :(

It's weird how people keep bashing the younger generations, but the fact that so many movies that have bombed were meant for them tells me they are not as stupid as Boomers like to think.

At a local store, while paying for gas a couple of years ago, I told the person behind the counter "man if I could build a time machine I'd take my dog and go back to 1982."

Her reply? "Sir, if you ever can do that take me with you."

Look, don't expect the mainstream media to change at all. It is too infested with the woke, and they cannot be removed by the very people responsible for creating them. Failure after failure will be blamed on white straight males, some "ism," you name it. Trying what they did back in the early 1980s is probably no longer possible now.

You see, I do have some idea of what is going on over there because I've seen it before, it's just by today's standards it wasn't nearly as toxic. It's a case of the Golem run amok this time.

One big problem is how expensive movies are now. I've heard that "Godzilla Minus One" cost less than twenty million to make, so it is almost guaranteed to make money- compare that to "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Disaster" which cost hundreds of millions. Anyone with at least two functioning brain cells could tell that movie was going to be a gigantic monster of a failure even Godzilla couldn't deal with. Big-budget movies must be MASSIVELY successful to turn a profit, and woke ones are going to fail, thus they are going to be vast money losers. Someone should do an update of "The Producers."

One thing few people discuss are investors. Surely they must be tired of loss after loss?

Bollywood, no. Japanese, yes- back in 1982 in England they showed some Japanese programming, and one was a fascinating murder mystery about a retired official reading over unsolved cases- then he realized what had happened in one of them.

One advantage to this era is distribution. Years ago you could try independent efforts but have no access to distribution- now of course this is not an obstacle, much to the chagrin of those who not only controlled the content but distribution as well.
