Now I'm asking where the fuck are Asian Vikings because at this point why not
China. Zheng Yi Sao led a fleet of 400 Junks with a crew of between 40,000 and 60,000.
Oh, wait that pirate.

Asian Vikings... hmm possibly The Philippines or Indonesia.

Asian pirates were odd because while they did commit piracy as we define it, a lot of the time they were actually more like privateer fleets, private fleets, or fleets working but "not working" for various countries' governments.

Hell, some of them acted like the British East India Trading Company, IIRC, though they didn't take land/countries... except when a few made a bid for Chinese dynasty thrones or came from deposed dynasties themselves?

I dunno, that area of Asian history is just so convoluted I have a hard time wrapping my head around it compared to the relatively simple "Western" pirates.

There was a gang of Filipino Pirates in the excellent Wes Anderson film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

A band of Asian pirates operating in itself isn't remarkable but unless you are paying attention to the movie, you would realize when they encountered the pirates they were sailing off the coast of West Africa and the pirates had an island base nearby and everything for some reason.

Now the movie didn't toss in Asian pirates fit inclusivity reasons, I think they were included just to be absolutely random like a lot of things injected in Wes Anderson films.

They could have given Astrid a Mediterranean/Arabic tan to indicate she's a descendent of thralls taken from further afield?

Literally the best I can come up with. Were it down to me, anyone who even mentions ESG scores would get fired from the production team.

Japan used to have many pirates, strange, that nobody made them Vikings yet.

And,i remember some old book about Polynesians named "Viking of Pacyfic",but it was,of course, metaphor.

One of the few ancient peoples who have managed to avoid black washing to some extent are the Romans, and I reckon that's because the Imperium Romanum is everything the left despises so wouldn't want any of their pet minorities to be arch imperialists.

The mere memory of the Might of Rome intimidates the progressive.
A black guy walking around Rome back then would have been uncommon but not unheard of. Heck, Nero once put on a show where all the day's gladiators were black.

With historical Roman figures we know which ones were black and which ones weren't. We also know what a lot of them looked like thanks to all the marble statues left laying around the Mediterranean.

Hollywood can't get ESG brownie points for blackwashing Rome. If they try someone who has done the research will point out an actual black Roman and ask "Why didn't you tell his story instead?"

That would be good for a show there

Sure there’d have been merchants or particularly exotic slaves walking around, but a full blown Black Roman Citizen would be a rare sight indeed. Aethiopes were not very common in the classical world as people didn’t often travel far from where they were born, and it was a long journey from Kush or Nubia to Athens or Rome.

The actress in question IIRC is actress Thandie Newtons daughter so she's actually pretty light skinned but her African features are still fairly recognizable.

Oh, there were Black dudes walking around in Britain from far flung reaches of the Republic/Empire -- such as legionnaires, merchants, et cetera. However, they weren't even a drop in the bucket.

Leftists who read that there were Black soldiers and merchants in Roman Britain see it as an excuse to run with "No SuCh ThInG aS a BrItIsH IdEnTiTy BeCaUsE We WeRe All mIgRanTs!" or "See! Black people did live in the UK [as in the context of modern times' numbers of Black British people] in ancient times!"

There was a Black Samurai in Japan: Does that mean that there were a large population of Black people in Japan? Of course not.

Cleopatra was from Greek descent -- incestuous Greek descent. But of course you have people going "CLeOpaTRa wAs BLaCk!"

What's even sadder was that a Black teenager wrote up saying that she "needed Cleopatra to be Black for a role model" or some rot.

Just... Jesus fucking Christ.

The abject rootlessness of African Americans and African Europeans, and their thrashing around for roots, is one of the saddest things you can see.

They are a people desperately in search of belonging, of a heritage they can draw upon for inspiration, and progressive politics is the pied piper leading them into oblivion.

African Americans (I'm speaking here about descendants of slaves) do have routes. They are Europeans. Dark skinned Europeans, but well, there's a reason there's an iconic meme about a black woman getting genetically tested to find out what her "tribe" was and being told she's German.

Culturally, if you are an African American descendent of slaves, you are European in the same way that an American that can trace their ancestry here back to the early 1800s is.

This is why African American isn't even a good term.

...You know, except the Muslim part, seeing two blonde, Swedish supermodel-like Lesbian Vikings making out in a longboat while carrying the bloodied, severed heads of their enemies is something I'd like to see.

You know, just for historical reasons and not because I'm a red blooded male.
Jor, for 'historical research purposes' look up Bo Derek, Kathy Shower and Farrah Fawcett

Roman racism was very different from what we'd call racism today. In fact, I wouldn't even call it racism as much as it was cultural exceptionalism. Barring very few exceptions - Persia, Greece, and Ethiopia - the Romans didn't so much as see themselves as a superior race as much as they were a superior culture. The Latins were the original Romans, yes, and the root of the Roman state and identity, but anyone could assimilate into Roman culture and become, well, Roman. Those who did automatically shared in Rome's superiority, no matter their actual ethnicity. In Roman eyes, an African Roman was superior to a German regardless of the latter's closer ethnicity to the Latins/Italians.

Simply put, civis romanus sum. It doesn't matter where you originally came from in the Empire, a Roman citizen is a Roman citizen, and any foreigner that messes with one gets a gladius to the face.

The Ancient World didn’t really have a concept of racism in a manner similar to our own. As you say, they were more prejudiced on grounds of culture than skin tone. Didn’t stop them from being massively xenophobic at times, but it wasn’t nearly as destructive as racial science and eugenics would prove to be.
