Worm WORM/Parahumans: Explaining, Discussing, Complaining. Lets do one or another!

I personally enjoy the worm fics but can understand why people would get sick of them.

I think it's just a interesting setting that's really easy to add in different powers/alternate universes. I can see why various writers want to put their own spin on it.

I mean, ultimately it's fun if you've read it and like the setting.

I just wish they remembered there's more than Brockton Bay

Why not go off and hunt Heartbreaker or The Fallen when you're so OP

Then again, I think some fics have Heartbreaker of The Fallen coming to Brockton Bay instead

How about create a 'Bitch about Worm thread' and then take this there.

The desire to save their strong female protagonist waifu from a life of suffering.

I don't think it's that - remember that a lot of the shit she goes through is her own fault(by putting herself in that position and/or making bad things worse). I think that a lot of people empathize too much with the bullied main character, and are vicariously living through a fictional character(and ain't that pitiful...).

Bullied, somehow they make her experience out to be extremely horrifying compared to what the average Inner City School student of Winslow probably experiences

Remember, a good portion of Winslow's students are part or associated with gangs or not doing so great to begin with. Taylor's experiences probably aren't much to the student who's probably peddling drugs or being beaten up by actual NeoNazis or being pushed into a gang and so on there

Hell, the trio were already more-or-less punished in canon, Emma BROKE when she realized Taylor was Skitter and that she was stronger both In power and as a PERSON than her, the bitch who was away from BB during it's bad times

Worm hits a sweetspot for fanfiction. First, it hits the minimum required for fanfiction: being popular. On top of this, it has interesting characters and setting, yet is by no means perfect. This means fanfiction in worm works as a effective crutch: there is a solid foundation, and room to improve. Finally, it is almost as easy as Familiar of Zero to AU, but instead of changing the inserted character, you change the power Taylor gets. All of this makes it very appealing to write fanfic of. Once this is combined with the feedback loop of increasing popularity with more and more fanfic, and of course this happened.

It's been slowing down ever since the Worm high started to cool. It's not all bad since there's less chaff to sift through, but that also means that there are fewer secret gems to dig up.

I’m surprised that they haven’t moved into Ward more often?

Though, to begin with, I don’t think they include most of the other Worm/Ward characters that’d be interesting to deal with like Teacher and that army of robot spiders

Worm is really only interesting until Leviathan with an honorable mention to the finale. The rest of the 'parahuman' verse never caught on because it's obtuse, depressing, and bears far too much of wildbow's odd personal baggage. Which is disappointing since Ward is legitimately an interesting setting.

As such the fanfic community could only really milk the beginning and end of Worm and the whole scene has been slowing down for years, ever since stuff like the Techno Queen dribbled out. It just how that sort of thing works.

[Sarcasm]There is an evil author on SV fellow NPCers. His name is RHjunor, he stated a fact in a outrageous and hateful way. Don't worry our brave PC Police have ensured the emotional terrorist won't hurt your feelings anymore.[/sarcasm]

Rule 2: Don’t Be Hateful

The issue is that the modern P.C. bar is set mighty low for "stalking and harassing." As in, any sort of behavior by a male can be immediately interpreted as "stalking/harassing," as if he were lurching along after her like Jason freaking Voorhees. Feminists could freaking chainsaw a man to death and then whimper to the cameras what oppressed victims all women were.

The song in question ("how do you like me now?") the guy is a high school clown who pulled a (admittedly pretty crass) prank on a stuck-up, boy-go-round girl who wouldn't give him the time of day. She later mocked him as a no-hope loser when he "took off for Tennessee" to start his music career. Meanwhile she went from being the school bicycle to married into money (the usual and intended trajectory for such) and found out it sucked. He's a radio star, she's a bummed-out burned-out housewife, and he's asking her in his song-- well, see the title of the song.

Hardly the helpless sobbing victim of the Patriarchy.

But of course, some people would rather die than give up their status as glorious golden Victim of the Week....

THREAD LOCKED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
Due in large part to the outrageous nature of @RHJunior's recent commentary he has received a very very hefty infraction; given that he is also the author of this story the thread is going to be locked, since until further notice it can't really operate normally.
Is he the same RHJunior that does the Christian webcomics? If so how the hell did he end up on SV? And if not that was a very unfortunate name to rip off.

It didn’t really feel that depressing

Only thing I was disappointed by was Jack Slash not showing more frequently a range of emotion that’d have made him more human

Or more poignant deaths like in anime/manga

Whenever I read books these days, I imagine characters drawn in anime style

Also, the finale being really drawn out

Hey, I liked Worm. To me it got less interesting when
Skitter became Weaver
, but up to that point it was really good. I'm not into fanfiction as a concept though, so I never read any, maybe that's why my perception of Worm is less distorted than others'.

What exactly was wrong with that part?

I tried to read worm once but my cat like attention span decided it liked the other shiny tab on my web browser.
I read many Fanfics of worm I learned the general idea of the story without reading the actual story.

I felt that the tempo of the story was switched up in a way that was a bit too jarring for my tastes. For such a long-running "book" (more like a series of books) switching things up so that the story doesn't get stale is a good thing, but I found that the events immediately following that particular twist just weren't very interesting.

Admittedly, I honestly didn’t like there being a timeskip that also later got characters unceremoniously killed off

Would it be wrong if I felt that characters in Worm existed, but just because they were 3-Dimensional didn’t mean they would get their own character arcs or even focus on themselves and their ends?

Kinda what made it harder for me to get the anime image properly in

Usually Shounen/Seinen at least gives some “poignancy” or sheer panic, terror, hate, sadness and so on near their ends or deaths or defeats

Even Berserk does it with characters like Rosine and The Slug Count

TBH, I also had a hard time bingeing on it....makes things harder to enjoy

I don't see why you would compare Worm with Shounen anime. It's like comparing a conveyor belt to a velociraptor.
