Dude I don’t own my name people make names mugs all the time I don’t see any of that money but this isn’t even about that you don’t have any ownership of your culture no one does or at least no one should taking your thought pattern to the extreme political cartoons would have to go people wearing American flag shirts gone the symbols that a people make for themselves aren’t own by anyone or at least shouldn’t be owned by anyone. Really Mickey Mouse should be public domain in my opinion. What about people who are made into memes and the people who make money off of that. To me that’s fineSo you would be cool with someone using your name in such a manner?
And that's where you're wrong.you don’t have any ownership of your culture no one does
Intellectual property rights are still property rights.Really Mickey Mouse should be public domain in my opinion.
Dude Mickey been around forever corporations shouldn’t be able to hold that forever the laws just keep getting extended. And that's where you're wrong.
Intellectual property rights are still property rights.
We'll just have to agree to disagree then.I could probably make that argument based on some of the shit I've seen going on in these stadiums. In any case it's more of an example to show that just yelling "free speech" for everything doesn't actually work, because as much of a free speech advocate as I am, I still recognize limits to it. I can also recognize that the subject under discussion does not represent a free speech argument, because this is not a case of private individuals being assholes, this is more along the lines of someone's name and image being used commercially without permission and acting entitled to do so. I brought up the example of Leonard Nimoy suing over the use of Spock's image specifically for that reason. This is also ignoring all the stupid arguments used to defend this bullshit, such as the "we're honoring them" defense.
Just being offended is one thing, it's another that you say you'd literally let some corporation use an image of you getting sodomized because "muh free speech." You know, I never thought I'd find myself on the opposite side of such an argument, but, again, this is largely because I don't see this as a free speech issue.
Actually no; intellectual property rights are a limited (theoretically; in practice, corporate lobbying has made it effectively unlimited) monopoly granted to you, ostensibly to motivate you in creating new things that take a great deal of effort to create, but little effort to copy. And that's where you're wrong.
Intellectual property rights are still property rights.
And from my point of view, it's just been another way that Natives have been abused for decades. No one has given a shit what we thought, so forgive me if I don't give a shit what you think now that the shoe is on the other foot.Dude Mickey been around forever corporations shouldn’t be able to hold that forever the laws just keep getting extended.
What are you arguing for you can’t say you own your culture that’s crazy. Cultural symbols and images are and should be open for everyone to use and reshape as they please to do otherwise is to create some weird abomination.
I’m having a hard time wrapping my mind around you thinking you can own your culture
You are one of many groups. Asians, Indians, Africans, Hispanics. Every group has this kinda shit, and only you seem to be making a big deal about it.And from my point of view, it's just been another way that Natives have been abused for decades. No one has give a shit what we thought, so forgive me if I don't give a shit what you think now that the show is on the other foot.
Oh boy, that sure makes it better. You are one of many groups. Asians, Indians, Africans, Hispanics. Every group has this kinda shit, and only you seem to be making a big deal about it.
What part of our culture has become popular? If anything, the old view of us as bloodthirsty savages has just gotten perpetuated. Also, there are things that stupid sports fans do, like draw cartoons of us sodomizing animals or getting sodomized by animals, or depicting us getting killed by their mascot. I have a picture somewhere of some fan dressed up as their team's mascot holding up the decapitated head of a Native impaled on a big Bowie knife. But according to you, Natives should just be cool with that.look at Latin American people who are part Native. They seem to embrace ANYTHING about their culture becoming popular. Why are North American ones different?
Wasnt congress trying to do something? That both Trump and Biden won't let those who helped us in Afghanistan immigrate is a disgrace.
So it’s revenge talking. And from my point of view, it's just been another way that Natives have been abused for decades. No one has give a shit what we thought, so forgive me if I don't give a shit what you think now that the show is on the other foot.
Blame Congress, not the President. Until Congress gets off its ass and raises the number of visas which can be granted to Afganis the ones who helped us are stuck in limbo because the executive branch's hands are tied. That both Trump and Biden won't let those who helped us in Afghanistan immigrate is a disgrace. These are people who put their lives at risk to help the US.
I'm saying sports teams shouldn't treat us like animals.
